My husband and I would like to move to a city/town in western Oregon where there is a real sense of community. A place where teenage boys still help old ladies across the street type of community. We do not have any children ourselves but if we did have a family we would like to belong to a community where values and morals are important. We currently live in Coos Bay, Oregon and we are definitely lacking in values here. I know we live in different times but I have faith these communities still exist. Thank you in advance for any advice or information anyone may have for us.

Oh, you might want to move to Newberg. At least we have more churches per capita than any other place in Oregon. Pretty nice town too. Not the wealthiest, but a good place.

There is a kind of cultural Mason-Dixon line that runs along the southern boundary of Lane County. Above that, you have the Willamette Valley where agriculture was the founding industry. The state put most of its colleges and universities there. The values that you're seeking require a good educational foundation. They are much more likely to prevail in the northern half of the state where the bulk of the state's well-educated people live.
Below Lane County is southern Oregon. Extraction industries like fishing and logging were the founding industries and there is still much evidence of the "roughneck culture" that goes along with that. Poverty and crime are higher in southern Oregon, so it's not surprising that poor behavior in the sub-criminal category is higher as well.

What you want will not be found in southern Oregon or west of the Coast Range. I would look in the Willamette Valley: Corvallis, Coburg, Newberg, McMinnville, Monmouth, Silverton, Sherwood, etc. The existence of a college or university is always a good sign.

I was going to suggest McMinnville or Silverton. Corvallis is probably larger than you want but I think it would work too.

East Gresham seemed to have lot of churches and still has some small Christian communities I remember were friendly and proactive. Also, you have the benefits of enjoying the beauty of Mt. Hood and the Gorge right near you.

Do you know I have yet to hear anything about Corvallis that makes me dislike it? I'm so ready to just get up and move - I know, jobs are hard to come by though...

Corvallis is too small a town for me personally, but for people that like those smaller cities, it is a great one.

Actually the only thing I don't like about it is that it is too BIG a town for me. But as I need a university or research setting to do my profession, it's actually a nice smaller city by those standards.

Thank you to everyone for your input. It sounds like in or around Corvallis is where we want to do some research. We will definitely be visiting the area to see what kind of vibe we get. It sounds promising. So the only thing now would be to find jobs. My husband and I are both currently employed at Walmart, anything in retail would be fine for me, although Walmart is a place I prefer to avoid altogether. My husband has several years experience in a distribution center, so that would be a nice alternative for him. Thanks again everyone.

There is a Target distribution center in Albany and a Lowe's distribution center in Lebanon. Maybe some employment opportunities there?
