We are looking to apply all over and an opportunity came up in Newport Oregon.
Iv'e read that the schools are not good.
Right now we have 3 children so the public schools are the most important thing for us right now.
Is there a lot of gangs or crime in the schools?
Thank you!

Overall, they are too crowded. Hardly any after school or extra curricular activities. Super low test scores because the teachers just can't give anyone any personal attention.

The teachers are overworked and will not work past what their union contract specifies, so no after school help.

If you do have your children go there you are going to have to do a lot of extra work at home to make sure your kids are learning what they have to learn.

If your kids are smart and you keep up on them they will be ok. If they are mediocre students and you don't put in extra effort, they will fall through the cracks.

Elementary is much better than the middle schools or high schools. Thank God I can afford private school now.

What private schools are available in the Newport Oregon area?
We are looking to relocate there from Texas.
Thanks in advance.

Schools in oregon, all of oregon, are fine for students who have parents who are actively engaged in their kid's education. If parents can't be bothered to make sure the child is doing and understanding the homework and that the child is behaving well in class, then it is hit or miss how the kids will do.

There is nothing wrong with the education offered, but teachers can not force a child to transfer the information into his brain. Parents have to let their expectations be known to the child and must insist upon appropriate school behavior.

Newport is a small tourist town. It is crowded with tourists in the summer and quiet in the winter. Shopping is adequate to meet every day living needs.

If your kids like outdoor sports, it is a good area. Fishing, crabbing, and clamming are good. Hiking, beachcombing, and tide pooling generally are interesting to chikdren.

Scenery is world class. Weather is temperate year round, but there is a lot of rain and wind. There can be marine fog.

Jobs are hard to come by and don't pay well, but if you are moving for a job, that isn't an issue.

Real estate is very reasonable considering it is beach property.

Newport is a small city of approx. 10,000 right on the coast. It is very touristy in the summer; more quiet in the winter. It is an hour drive over a mountain range to the nearest city of any real size. Gangs and crime are not an issue; the worst crime the average citizen would deal with would be property type crimes.

If you have never visited the Oregon coast, Please Please Please make a visit before accepting a job. Newport is 1 - 3 hours drive from the main population centers of the Willamette Valley. Overall, the Coast is not considered a desirable place to live - even most Oregonians would never consider living there full-time. This is due to its isolation from the main population centers by a mountain range, a lack of jobs, lack of services, and most importantly, the Weather. It is windy almost every day-all day year round and the temperatures even in the summer rarely get above 70. If it isn't windy, it's normally foggy and damp. On average, it will rain 180 days per year and approx. 70 inches of rain will fall; the sun will make an appearance approx 150 days per year with the majority of those days being partly to mostly cloudy. A completely clear sunny day on the Oregon coast is not very common. The only people on the beach in swimsuits are a few little kids who don't seem to feel the cold - the ocean is too cold to swim in without a wet/dry suit and it's a rare day when you can stand on the beach without a jacket, even in the summer.

The beach in Oregon is not like the beach in other places; it's beautiful and it's sandy, but otherwise not at all comparable to the beaches on the East Coast, Gulf Coast, or California.

Yes, the parents determine the quality of their child's education. If they can't sit down at the kitchen table every night and help their child with homework (not do it for them) then the child won't do homework. It's that simple.

Some classrooms do have trouble with disruptive behavior. During my sister's last year of teaching (last year), she had a problem student who took up a huge amount of classroom time. Then the girl got measles, because her parents were anti-vaccine among other forms of child abuse, and she was gone for 3 weeks. My sister said it was heaven, and she dreaded the girl coming back to classes. I feel sorry for those kids, who will have to put up with years of a classmate like that.

The weather on the Coast is fine. These types of generalizations about the weather on the Coast don't really help much. There are a lot of microclimates here. If you don't like the weather in one place, you can find something more to your liking a few miles away. A mile or two inland will get you away from most if not all of the wind. If you need sun every single day, then you should definitely move to Yuma, Arizona. If sun every other day is enough, and you like cooler temperatures, then the Oregon Coast might work for you.

Your other points I don't really disagree with.

I personally love that the weather barely gets above 70 degrees, again I might be bias due to the fact I grew up on the Oregon coast but yeah I think it is personal thing on the weather

The education field uses greatschools.org to judge schools.

Looking at Newport schools, they have one great magnet middle school, and mediocre schools from K-12
