Do you know of any Oregon beach towns with a good bus system? (Portland: how much, unemployment)

my impression: Portland & suburbs: probably the best transportation in Oregon. coastal buses: do they exist?

with all due respect to my beloved Oregon:

i haven't gotten around much but it seems the Oregon coast is underdeveloped. when you consider the population of Oregon can be compared in sheer numbers to the population of Los Angeles County in CA, then you get a feeling for why this state has so much more room to grow. the tax base is smaller, for services.

i have the feeling that the bus sytems closer to Salem/Portland will be the most accommodating. in Eugene, the bus lines going to & near U of O are the best routes, IMO... all the other destinations seem to take forever.

i'm very interested to see what others will chime in with *happy smile*

There is a city bus system here in the Coos Bay and North Bend area. I'm sorry but I don't know much about it. I just see the bus once in a while. Perhaps you could find more infor or a number to call here City of Coos Bay, OREGON :: coosbayonline.com ::

Yes, there is generally always high unemployment on the coast, and yes the weather is grey and cool and overcast and rainy much of the year. But the scenery on the whole coast is exquisite. Drugs aren't a bigger problem than anywhere else in the state.

There are many wonderful, quaint little towns all along the coast including, but not limited to: Astoria (rainiest city in Oregon, however), Newport, Lincoln City, Florence, Coos Bay, Bandon, Brookings-Harbor... Some people really enjoy Seaside and Cannon Beach, but I find them to be a little too touristy personally.

The state of Oregon is actually smaller in population than the city of Los Angeles, let alone the county. That said, most of the towns on the coast are really tiny and wouldn't have a bus system because they're just too small! The largest urban area on the coast is Coos Bay/North Bend with a combined population of about 25,000 people.

Tillamook County looks to have a decent bus system. Check out Tillamook County cities plus Cannon Beach in Clatsop County. There is bus service available around the county and its largest city, Tillamook (which is inland a few miles from the coast), and also to the Portland area and up to Cannon Beach.

Edit: Lincoln County and Clatsop County also appear to have decent bus systems that would be worth looking into.

Most beach towns, if not all, are small enough where a top notch bus system is not going to be a financial reality for the town.

If you are looking for a good bus system from one beach town to next the it really doesn't exist.
Getting around on the coast ain't easy if you don't have your own transporation.

And the comparison to Los Angelos and California?
WE DON"T WANT OREGON TO BECOME CALIFORNIA!!!
The coast is a place to get away from it all, that's the beauty of it, and you can take your "room to grow" statement right back to SOCAL!!!!!!!!
The "Growing" is what is ruining what makes the Oregon coast so special!
The coast is supposed to rustic.
The coast is supposed to be a getaway.
The coast is supposed to be where you can feel like you are in a special place!
This is OREGON for God's sake, not CALIFORNIA!!!!

All of Oregon's beach town have their downsides.
If you are not a tourist with money to spend, or have one of the very few living wage jobs on the coast, IT CAN get pretty bleak.
I have a couple of realtives that live on the northern coast, and I know that there is quite an underground economy that goes on.
It's quite different visiting the coast for a day or two, and having fun and dreaming about living there.
Actually the reality of living on the coast will slap you right in the face if you aren't single with a good job or subsidized.
It's expensive, and the weather sucks.
That's the truth. If you disagree, feel free to give examples of success stories.
I bet we won't hear much.

I am fairly certain that no one is suggesting turning Oregon into California... I interpreted that as comparing for reference to show how much less crowded (better) Oregon is than CA!

The only buses I have seen around Lincoln City are the Chinook Winds Casino buses...They seem to be everywhere.
