I like it when my students say 'yes, maam' when I'm disciplining them...I don't like it when the grocery store clerk or some such person says, 'can I help you maam'? Weird, but true.

Personally I don't mind.
My 87 yr old mother gets annoyed when she and my brother are at a restaurant and the waitress addresses them as "you guys".
That doesn't bother me either.....

I don't mind someone young calling me sir or Mr.

But it drives me nuts that my batty neighbor calls me Mr. Mike and she is only one year younger than me.

I asked this question on the food forum regarding the different reactions I got from female wait staff (trying to be correct here) in Southern vs Northern restaurants. I worked for the US Navy where "Ma'am" is the proper way to address a woman of any age and a sign of respect. And my job took me to shipyards around the coast of the US, especially to the South where "Ma'am" is commonly heard in restaurants and appreciated. However it gets a very cold response in the North, especially in the Northeast. I learned on the food forum that it is because it implies that the server is "old" and is an insult

Yeah, I hate being called hon, it's usually by someone from the South or West. I'm young, but you know how they say it, it's like being called lil girl, that's insulting, being called a baby. Like, sorry hon, your opinion doesn't matter, go play in the sandbox.

Oh, you people are convicting me! Ever since I turned 60, I decided that as a rite of passage, I could call people whatever I wanted. I call lots of people "Honey" and "Sweetheart"! I am in DEEP trouble! I thought it was just my Southern heritage finally showing itself after years of basically denying it!

Ladies are treasured and treated with the greatest respect here in the south.
"Yes ma'am", with a friendly smile and the willingness to do whatever they wish for.
Simple as that. That's a great part of being southern.
