It rubs me the wrong way. I think that word should be abolished from the english language.

Not me, I LOVE it! I feel like it's a title I finally earned. What I hated was being called "young missy."

I have mixed feelings about it, but I now qualify as a "ma'am" so I'm trying to get used to it.

Edit to add: I did get a little worked up when the 19 year old boyfriend of a 40 year old woman called me ma'am.....I'm only 7 years older than her!!

By the way, when I got my first job as a person who walked around a theater lobby selling flowers, I was given this advice:

When you see someone someone who is obviously single and on a date, ask them if they want a flower for their wife. They giggle, they blush, and it sells the flower a lot of times. If you see someone who looks good and married, ask them if they want a flower for their girl friend. If you see someone who looks young and is self conscious about it, call her "ma'am" (respectfully). And vice versa, call the middle-aged woman "miss."

That's how you sell a lot of flowers!

Me too!! (I got called young missy plenty of times when I had what my mom considered a smarty attitude!)

I think the lack of a Yes/No M'am and Yes/No Sir is disrespectful and a great indicator of what is wrong with our society today. (Maybe I feel this way because I am southern....I realize other parts of the country and world do not use this custom as much as we do.)

I'll take 'ma'am' over 'babe' any day of the week.

I'm definitely old enough to be "ma'amed" so I 'm fine with it. Here in the south, it is a title denoting respect. So I have no problem with it. In fact, I occasionally call women "ma'am" if I need to address them at work. Not my co-workers, I mean, but our customers.

I don't mind, as long as people don't insult me, anything is fine!

Lol, Im on the same wavelength as you!
Actually I got that a LOT when visiting in TN or OK. The men tip their hats to you and are more polite (than Im used to) than when I lived in Az and even here in Calif. I like when they address you as 'little lady'.
