In pre-history? Fire. Protection, sterilization, food preservation, warmth in winter, light after dark.

In recorded history? The compass. It allowed navigation over long distances without any landmarks (clouds/fog) leading to the exploration of the earth's seas.

In modern history? The printing press. Allowed the information explosion that ultimately led to the industrial age and modern times.

In even more modern history? The transistor. All of the digital revolution depends on it.
