Plastic, look around your home or office, it's everywhere. Maybe it's not the most important but it's up there.

On a more personal level, my DVR. I don't even know how I used to watch television before it. Now that I have one I could never go back to watching tv with all those annoying commercials. It may not be that important to mankind's existence but I love it.

I would suggest writing using a symbolic system to encode thoughts. The Cuneiform documents are still readable.
