I agree it's important, but not because it helped us to get to where we are today, because I don't think where we are today is as much of an improvement over where we're coming from as some people think.

I say language because it's important in order to have complex ideas, but that isn't to say that our abilities have been used in the 'best' way. I think I value it more because of what it has the potential to accomplish.

I'm going with the Television. People like to scoff TV, but it opened up communication around the world.

I've had this discussion with people before and there were interesting answers. One person said 'paper', and I thought that was a good one.
