Hard to pick just one isn't it, but I'd offer this short list
The wheel
The Gutenberg press
The steam engine
Television
The Internet - now we all have a device in our home/pocket that contains the sum total of human knowledge. Though most of us just use it to argue with total strangers and look at pictures of cats.
Not an invention at all but I was listening to a TED talk and the speaker was filling us in on hackers. He was a hacker that works in security now. I don't remember his name but a comment that he mentioned, something to the effect of:
Most people look at a device, tool, thing and will ask the question, "what does it do?" The Hacker looks at a device, tool, or thing and will ask the question; "What can I make it do?"
True invention happens with a need and a curiosity into the unknown. It is the amazing person that can look into the unknown and create something of value that helps others. A few weeks back I was at science camp with my son and the 5th grade classes from his school. It was a week long school that for a focus is interested in the outdoors, animals, space, geology. At one class we were taught to look to animals and see how they have adapted to their world over time. It is interesting that we as people create adaptations that help us to live better. We can't fly so we create a device that helps us to fly. We can not live deep in the ocean so we create a device to get us there. The wheel for sure is an amazing invention. in door plumbing is an amazing invention as well. So many amazing inventions out there. I have no idea what would be the greatest of all. One I prefer is this device sitting on my desk that I am working on right now. I can see the world from this device. What an amazing invention.
I'll be another to say the wheel. It has provided a bases for land based transportation and moving things since it was invented. Even ships have relied upon it as well and try landing an airplane without it. On non snow covered land, before some smartass chimes in!
