The "Ice Box" was very common in our neighborhood (Canada) during the 1930's.

My parents had a supplied custom made sign that showed 4 different numbers in lbs and you hung the lb number for what ice you wanted. It hung by the corner with the number in a reading position for the ice wagon. He had a ice pick and would cut the ice into the the size wanted.

We had the milkman, breadman, and iceman all coming by with horse drawn wagons. Even a farmer would come by every so often with a horse drawn wagon full of fruits and vegetables from his farm. Dad would buy a bushel of apples that were kept cold in the basement. The floor door was open at one time and as a small kid fell backward down the steps to the basement floor. Recall dad having a small garden in back and I at times had to pull out some fresh eating onions from the ground and shaking off the dirt. We had some stalk tomatos also.

House phones were quite rare here in England when I was a boy in the 60s. I can't
remember anybody I knew who had one!! Everybody used the big red phone boxes!!
They were everywhere back then. I did'nt get a house phone till about, hmmmm, 1980.
Now of course, everyone has them, plus all the cell phones. Times sure have changed!!!

My in-laws lived 15 miles from town and didn't have a telephone until the mid-1960's.
