Yes, and they had to change the ending for the 1950s code. In the play, instead of Patty McCormick getting struck by lightning, the mother killed herself & the father said, "At least I have my little girl...." . Rhoda just smiling that evil smile ......
Now THAT was scary.
I remember that book and the movie, too. I was in nurses training at the time and we discussed it in our psychology class whether it was possible to pass along a "bad seed". In those days (mid-50's) not as much was known about genetics and psychosis, so all mental illness was thought to be "emotional" in origin. That was the prevailing theory at the time.

I remember bronzed baby shoes. Does anyone still do that? We had the first shoes bronzed for both our babies.

Actually there is a company, I think American Bronzing Company that does that. I had a pair of each of my sons baby shoes bronzed by them.

There is still a lot of speculation about whether or not mental illlness is genetic. But, I remember when mothers of Autistic children were blamed for their chidren's disorders because they were told that they were "refrigerator mothers" by Bruno Bettelheim , a prominent psychiatrist.

Mental illness does tend to run in families. It is probably related to brain chemistry which is a function of our genetic makeup.

The Star Spangled Banner w/ the flag waving every night at about 12:30. Then, the (three or four) stations shut down until 6:00 a.m. even in New York City.

Party line telephones!! I remember the big, black, HEAVY phone we had. Sometimes you'd pick up to place a call, and hear other folks having their conversations. You had to hang up, and wait till there wasn't anyone else on the line to make your call. And the phone numbers started with a word, followed by a number. Never dreamed there'd ever be such a thing as cell phones- let alone computers!
