We had wooden windows with ropes and weights, but the weights weren't that heavy as far as I know. They were pretty small. The house was built in the 1920s.
I have no idea how old this farm house is, probably late 1930s if its that old. It is my belief though that the building I now use as a small storage barn behind this house is the original homesteaded 2-room home. It may go back to the 1920s.
The old bathtub I took out of the front bath in this house had 1947 written on it but that's the only date I can use to guess at its age. I am only assuming these weights are 5 lbs each because they have the number "5" molded into each one. Then too, they sure feel that heavy but I didn't weigh them.
I remember when one had to use the ATM at their own bank, and there were no networks, no interchangeability. We used to remember where the ATM's for our own bank was, even in a place like New York City.
I remember when a teacher first described a coming plastic card for charges. Then came the card swiper and you got a carbon copy of your transaction back. Those were not secure in the least.
Gas station attendants who would pump my gas and squegie my windshield.
There's actually a few around here that do that. I'm not a big tipper but when they clean the windshield and back window I do give a tip.
It's a much appreciated thing.
Gas stations that gave out Green Stamps and free stuff like glasses and steak knives.
