Well, I shamed myself into working on some new photos.
I'm always happy to see Goldfinches about. They seem to come and go - staying for a week or three, then flit off somewhere for a while and meander back a month later. They don't hang around in the winter months, though.
We have an old cherry tree that still bears fruit and for a week or so, when berries are ripe, we get visitors to the tree that we don't normally see.
Like a young robin.
And this female red wing blackbird.
And even usual land-lovers, like chipmunks, can't resist a fresh treat.
I was in the basement rec-room watching tv when I felt a presence. I glanced up at the window and found this guy checking out the room.
I'm quite fond of squirrels and the red variety, which predominates up here are real characters. They're the Jack Russell Terriers of the squirrel world. In the pic below, I thought he looked like he was opening a fortune cookie.
Sometimes, heavily-overcast days can make for a dramatic shot. It flattens out some colours while others stand out.
Then again, brighter days offer their own brand of specialness.
The goldfinches are New Jersey's state bird. They were scarce for a while, then a few years ago I started seeing a lot of them. Apparently they are one of the few birds that breed in late summer or autumn, not spring, so when winters are harsh, fewer survive.
I was going to post a pic that I took last year but I seem to be having difficulties posting a pic. It keeps coming up with a broken link. I don't get it.
