Ok, I'm in Panera bread right now. It's located in an extremely uppity neighbourhood, with all of New York's wealth, so we can get the lack of class chatter out of the window.
I'm working, trying to finish up some next week's work prior to tomorrow.
Same mom, third time, over the last few months. And same dude in the same weekend spot, this is my favourite spot, placed right next to the window, giving me a gorgeous view of Downtown Darien, with a power outlet located right underneath.
This time she smiled and even asked me if it's okay. I asked if I could leave and she said "No". But I was way too surprised she actually asked and she even remembered me, yikes.
Since she spoke, I engaged her in conversation as she was doing it. And it went a little awkward. I think I may have embarrassed her with silly questions, but... can't control my loose mouth. If you're wondering about the silly questions, well one of them, I asked if she was even a little uncomfortable doing this before strangers. She said she knows my face and she trusts me
Then I asked her if I could pull the windows blinds down, as people were wandering around outside and she said, "Thanks you so much", as I brought it down, with an extended accentuation on "so"
Is it normal for moms to breastfeed in public or am I being a bum?
You are being a bum. Breastfeeding is perfectly natural, even in public.
Repeat after me...breastfeeding is about feeding a baby. It has nothing to do with you, me, or anyone else.
That's not true.
Breastfeeding is all about the MOTHERS RIGHT to do whatever she wants and you better damn well NOT complain about it - no matter how uncomfortable it makes you feel.
I think that breastfeeding is rude and inconsiderate. Babies should be breastfed in private, not public.
Women who do this are just trying to make a statement it has nothing to do with feeding the kid. They could feed the kid in the car, in the bathroom, or even better AT HOME since, IMHO babies don't belong in restaurants anyway.
Even if she carelessly adjusts her breast while speaking to the dude and a good portion of the breast is visible to the dude Seriously?? I love this country.
God bless America. In India, I'd be spanked for being in the same area.

Yeah, not actually the case. Perhaps a small subset are trying to be provocative about breastfeeding rights, but for the most part nursing moms in public are just exercising their right to feed their child.
Fortunately, the law tends to err on the side of the nursing mother and not on the side of your opinion.

Haha! I imagine if it is the first time you're encountering this, it would come as a bit of culture shock. But Zimbo has the right of it - breastfeeding is just about feeding the baby, not anything else (99 times out of 100).
There's a whole industry dedicated to nursing covers, nursing tops, etc. made for discreet access for nursing in public. So now you know.
