I have two EMTs in the family. The stress of some of the desparate situations you're called to help out in is more a factor than the danger, so there is a lot of burnout. But if you think you're up to it, it's a very admirable job. I'd be very pleased with your career choice myself. If you can't swing it without your father's help, that's really a shame. Another job in the medical field would be a compromise, but still helping and as of now I believe the job market is still good. I hope you can accomplish your dream though.
At the end of the day it's your choice and only your choice what your life path will be.

Parents who really love their kids for what they are do that. Too many parents consider their kids some kind of project that reflects on themselves or try to use their children to accomplish something they themselves never did. Their children's accomplishments are seen as status symbols, it's not what makes the adult child happy but what looks good for the parents.
