I agree 100 percent with the above post and I have lived in both areas. Personally I think ON THE WHOLE WV people are friendlier.

This might get me scuffed a bit but Uniontown is in at best a holding pattern. "Uncle Joe Hardy" has all but abandoned Uniontown. 30 East Main is gone, the specialty shops he opened are gone and word has it that Outdoor World isn't long for the city either. The "theatre district" nearly resorted to begging for pennies on the street this year to keep the doors open.

The rest of the city center is barely lumbering along. There is fairly good shopping outside the city but mostly your typical suburban fare. Lots of other things to do if nature is your thing. The mountain area has much to offer.

And yes I can speak honestly. Born in Fayette County, family in every town and patch and visit the city almost daily for work related stuff. I'd sincerely suggest it for those familiar with the area, those who already have some connection.

People that talk about Uniontown being a "quiet friendly town" obviously have never lived there.

Those that live in uniontown like to be unemployed and collect their welfare checks to buy drugs. They don't care about architecture or historic landmarks. They all flock to walmart and mcdonalds. Everyone is narrow-minded and traditional. The blacks are racist against whites, the whites are racist against blacks.

Uniontown high school is one of the worst schools in the ENTIRE STATE - they waste their money on their school sports and hire teachers that do not know how to teach or communicate with teens. The police are corrupt and frame people for false crimes, however they never respond to real-life emergencies. The police randomly kill people and then cover it up. If your house is on fire, chances are that your neighbor will just look out their window and grin instead of calling 911. If you wave at your neighbors when driving past their houses, they turn their heads and ignore you instead of saying hello.

... I could spend hours typing about reasons why people should never move to uniontown.

Basically: if you like racism, drugs, dirty/ignorant people and corruption - you will love uniontown. Take a drive down Gallatin Ave at 3am - if you don't get carjacked, you will probably be solicited by a hooker or arrested and shot by a cop for no reason.

I presume you're referring to Uniontown PA? If so, it's a no-brainer -- Morgantown. Uniontown looks like it's given up and resigned itself to a slow death by attrition. Morgantown may not be the hippest joint, but WVU will always add at leas a spark of vitality to the place.

First, you said you are moving from Ann Arbor. If you are a Michigan fan, then you would be well-advised to hide that fact when moving to this area, especially if you move to West Virginia. There is still much bitterness over the Rich Rodriguez situation.

As far as where to live, I've lived in both places and Morgantown is by far the better choice. The College of Creative Arts constantly brings good cultural choices into town, WVU brings events, the WVU Medical Center is there, making for good health care choices, and the economy is relatively recession-proof. The Waterfront has recently developed and has a 10 mile bike/walking trail along the river. It can be a difficult place to live if you're not connected to the university, Mylan, or to one of the other larger employers in town, but overall it is a nicer place to live. The only drawback compared to Uniontown will be home prices. Prices can be steep for a nicer home in Morgantown proper. Many people live out at Cheat Lake, but that can take 20 minutes to drive during "rush hour." Morgantown and University High are both good schools.

Uniontown will offer much less expensive real estate but is a largely isolated town that is still run by a few families and has a severe crime problem for being such a small town. Fayette County has been referred to in the past by people that have been tranferred into there for government jobs as "Fayette-Nam" due to rampant crime and drug problems. Joe Hardy's efforts to revitalize downtown Uniontown have helped, but that gravy train is coming to an end. In the end, Uniontown is not a bad place, and it has been and will be helped tremendously when they finally link Route 43 to I-68 in the South and to complete the Brownsville-to-Uniontown expressway. If you do move to Uniontown, move into South Union Township--it is the best township in Fayette County.

Morgantown hands down. Not sure what type or price range of house you are looking for but Cheat Lake area is really pretty. Also more quiet, especially on game day when the whole state comes to the WVU game.

/\ If you would have asked first you'd get information like you see in this thread. And northern schools are far better than those in the south, even the bad ones. Evidence is the town folk who suckered you into moving to such a place. Be honest. You didn't move there so you could fix up an old house, you moved there because it was so cheap.

I am in total agreement with what you said, MakeItBrown, Uniontown is unfortunately the worst place to relocate, raise a family or even survive. We found that out too late. Now we are stuck in this "black hole" with no hope of escape.
