CapitalOne says my FICO score is 819 and goes to 820 in months where my credit card balance is sub-$1,000. It can't go higher than that because I have no debt and nothing but 5 credit cards that all auto-pay in full every month. I don't need a car loan or mortgage and that's what it would take to get a higher FICO score.

Who cares, a darn FICO score is not a contest and is one of those things that is best left to yourself....BTW, I have a high score...so this is definitely sour grapes. Like a poster above...have no debt, pay cards off monthly.....live below means., etc.
Why don't you score yourself on how many times a week you have sex? About as inane!

Mine is 843 (Experian). No idea how I got there other than paying my mortgage on time, paying my credit cards on time, paying my bills on time and having no bad debts.

843-848 of 850 for the past year.

1 credit card I use. 1 mortgage, 1 car loan. A bunch of cards I never use. No idea what drives it, as my score was a 720 or so for the previous 10 years.

Just checked yesterday. I beat OP by 1 pt. Now at 825. I made my mistakes early before age of 20(trusting bad ex-gf) and my credit was under 500 15 years ago. Only loan I have is a mortgage and about $11K left in student loans

Mine's been hovering between 840-850 for years. Big mortgage, lots of car loans, never missed a payment on any loan since getting my first credit card 35 years ago.

However, as has been pointed out, a good credit score is not indicative of financial responsibility.

LynnKrause1 - Sour Grapes? Why are you here? People are asking questions about this very subject Gheeesshhh.
I am posting because I think I have a relevant story to help. I won't post my score so Lynn won't think I'm whining or bragging. Anyway I have a decent score merely by making payments on time and more than a 7 year history. I threw an amazon envelope in the trash because I never do anything with them. I use credit Kama and as an extreme pessimist I do endorse this site. Anyway, my score dropped 50 points for no reason that I could explain. "THE HORROR" . A month later I received another Amazon envelope and, this time, decided to open it. I had a bill for $13 and change for something I had completely forgotten about. $13!!!!! Just like that, 50 points boom. I paid the bill and sought advice from oh, I can't remember but they told me the drop was definitely the missed payment.
SO... The moral of the story is, I called Amazon after making the payment. I asked, politely!, if the mark could be removed from the account considering history etc... Just like that he complied and said it may take up to 8 weeks to show up on my reports.
A weeks later I checked and voila!!! just like new
Another moral of the story is, as in life, you don't get all you ask for but if you don't as your chances are reduced to zero.
Make your payments. The other thing about credit Karma is it's free and it provides advice on how to elevate your score and what factors influence it. I have always been good in business and private. If you are a shopper and run up cards and have a ridiculous car payment, your score will grow slowly. Debt to limit on cards is a factor.
I drive older cars and get teased. Not so old they are junk, nice old. Recently a colleague and I were both put on disability. They have two car payments in excess of $650. My car is paid for. I don't get teased anymore and I don't have to sell my house. Think about your future and not what others think. I write a monthly budget. For some, writing down what you spend daily is an eye opener.

be careful with the fico scores you get from both amex and discover .

they are fico 8 scores .

they are called bank card scores and are not the same thing as a comprehensive fico score .

fico 8 uses a different scale that runs to 900 so right off the bad your actual fico score can be up to 50 points lower .

fico 8 also weights credit cards overly heavy . it carry's little weight from other category's of debt . you can miss payments in other category's and may see little reflection in the score .

there is also fico 9 which dis-guards medical debt. there are 50 different fico scores used for different industry's

Never late on a payment more than 30 days (I've misplaced a bill now and then). I have a LOT of credit cards I've accumulated over the years, over $50,000 in credit line, of which I am rarely using more than a few grand; I pay them in full.
see above . your discover card score is a fico 8 score and goes to 900 . you can actually be 50 points less
