I wasn't sure whether I should post this in the Philly crime thread or here. But this is rather disturbing. And it seems like neighborhood residents (and the author) are trying to blame the crossfit members and other new residents for the hostility.
Not surprising one bit. Brewerytown is gentrifying so quickly, and it's pressed directly against some very tough neighborhoods. In fact, this type of gentrification appears to skip some stages because of developers trying to take over more areas aggressively to keep profits moving. Maybe I'm wrong.

My gf, from New England, ran into a girl she graduated high school with randomly the other day, and she was like "I live in Strawberry Manison"! brewerytown has probably changed more than any neighborhood in the last few years.

Rembrandt's closing in Fairmount

Interesting article about a number of long time owners of Restaurants in Fairmount looking to cash out. Good for them I guess!

Our wedding ceremony was at Strawberry Mansion (THE mansion). We drove up Ridge ave last week to visit. Can't imagine any (I assume your gf's freind was white) person living in that area. If s Starbucks ever opens there, the floodgates have opened!

Are people here aware that Strawberry Mansion used to be a fairly Jewish neighborhood? Meaning it may have been majority white once upon a time.

I remember chatting with a 20something white guy who lived there on a northbound 61 bus one evening.

Then there's my friend who works as a chef for Amtrak. He's white and gay, and he lives with his boyfriend (part Puerto Rican, part white) and another GWM on North 32d Street near Cumberland. He moved there after moving out on his old boyfriend who lived in the Gayborhood.

As I said, there are those who don't let fear govern their decisions.

That last sentence applies to most of North Philly.

The first is the classic succession pattern in city after city, thanks in large part to the real estate industry's practice of promoting racially restrictive covenants that ran with the land; many of these forbade sale to Jews as well as blacks.

Gays are truly the ones to follow when looking for the next "hot" neighborhood. No joke. I met a couple of my wife's gay co-workers during Pride on Sunday and one couple said they bought their house on 19th and Carpenter back in 2006. 2006! Street view of G-Ho back then was a dump! Granted, you provide only two instances of gays in Strawberry Mansion, but it will be interesting to see if this is a sign that Strawberry Mansion will be the next frontier of revitalization.

I know a ton of gays who have moved to several once/ still dumpy South Philly neighborhoods, and a lot in Fishtown, and now University City. Strawberry Mansion is a pipe dream, but you never know. I would love for Philadelphia's gay scene to spread to Fishtown or Passyunk. Many of the gay clubs in Center City have become straight washed.

I’m not saying they weren’t wise in their purchase but I bought my first house in Center City in 2004 and at that time, the realtor estate brokers were pushing Graduate Hospital really hard, actually harder than any other neighborhood so it was already very clearly "the next thing" in the mainstream. Now had your friends bought in 1996, that would have been bold.
