Looks like Kenney will be moving to replace the SRC with a local school board. This is a bold move. I think the fear that this will encourage Harrisburg to underfund Philly schools further is legitimate. It seems hard to deny, however, that the SRC has failed. I wonder if we will be seeing an increase in property taxes?

Penn Museum refresh to begin: https://philly.curbed.com/2017/11/2/...ion-renderings

I always found it a bit dowdy. This should make it much more inviting.

There is also a new site to donate funds to specific public schools: The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia

I wish there was a way to divert my city taxes directly to specific schools. For example, if I were to donate to a school through this site, I would put in my Philadelphia tax account number and be given a credit to it for the amount donated. Something like that. So come tax time, when submitting payment for wage tax, etc., the amount I owe to the city minus the credit amount from donating would be what I submit.

Rizzo statue to go, Mayor Kenney's administration says

Well, this will certainly solve our city's greatest issues. Not that I care about Rizzo, but historical purging seems like a bad sign...

Well, the statue will be relocated rather than removed from public view completely.

That's more akin to putting "Rocky" at the base of the Art Museum steps rather than atop them.

I'll admit that I wouldn't have been upset had the mayor decided to keep the statue where it is. The things I've learned about Rizzo over the years lead me to conclude that he was a more complex (and contradictory) man than his legend makes him out to be (for good or ill). He certainly was more memorable in many ways than any other mayor we've had this century, though I'd rank Joe Clark, Richardson Dilworth and Ed Rendell above him in terms of quality of leadership.

I think he is worthy of public honor - somewhere in this city. Perhaps in the Italian Market, which was the heart of his base of supporters when he was mayor.

City Nixes Plans for Columbus Boulevard "Super Wawa"

Thank goodness. What is up with Blatstein and all of these terrible anti-urban proposals?

It's a real head-shaker for me after all Blatstein really saw the potential of Northern Liberties and went for it.

Blatstein is also all over the place. First it's a rooftop shopping district (I think he termed it a "European village") on top of a massive casino (would have been awful for that neighborhood), then it's a rooftop shopping district on an apartment building on Broad. Aside from rooftop retail being an awful idea (and in the way he was proposing, very tacky), these projects, including the super Wawa, have no rhyme or reason.

The man needs to focus, and hire some professional but realistic urban designers while he's at it.
