More good news.

Philadelphia startup ecosystem ranks among world's top 30 and has a value of $68B, report finds
https://www.bizjournals.com/philadel...ystem-top.html

In its annual report released Thursday, Startup Genome ranks the city at No. 27 out of more than 280 regional ecosystems around the world based on factors like startup growth and activity, innovation and research, capital availability, talent and support for companies. Philadelphia maintained its international rank from 2022 as well as its No. 11 ranking in the U.S., even with some shakeup in the national top 10 from last year.

Random post, but hey MarketStEl (Sandy), I was looking up something about New Hope, PA and noticed this statement on Wikipedia...

"New Hope and the surrounding Solebury Township and Upper Makefield Township are part of the New York metropolitan area."

Since when is New Hope a part of the NYC metro? I ask you since I know you have access to Wikipedia edits.

Idk but I just changed it. I wouldn't put it past a weirdo from city-data doing it lol.

"Philly's so great that I live in NYC!"
"Philly's so great that I live in Boston!"

LOL!

I see condos popping up all over the place (Lehigh Ave, Delaware Ave, Spring Garden St, Rhawn St), which I suppose is OK ... I'd rather see single family dwellings like Northbank on the river in Fishtown.
Too many ways to get screwed in a condo situation.

And Kansas City's so great that I live in Philadelphia.

I've met cpomp and know that his affection for the city he once lived in is as strong as mine for my forever hometown.

Various reasons and influences shape our locational choices, and it's not always a sign of dissatisfaction or disgust with the city one lives in now when someone moves to another city. Job opportunities may be better, or romance may drive one to relocate to where the love interest lives, or one may choose to follow an employee that moves (that's how my Queens-born, Trinidadian-American bf wound up growing up in Adamstown, Lancaster County).

I find my hometown only gets better each time I return (though I am saddened by the deterioration of the neighborhood where I grew up). I do not wish to live in a drive-everywhere place, however, even if driving around the place is quite painless the overwhelming majority of the time. So here I am, in a city with undeniable problems, but also many assets and attractive qualities, including decent public transit and a subway.

Wanna try again?

Responding to your more substantive point now.

Actually, the buildings you see popping up all over the place now are rental apartments, not condos. SFR construction has pretty much dried up after the halving of the property tax abatement — which was really a subsidy to the builder more than it was a break for the buyer.

Industry trade publications say that demand for rental apartments in the city actually outstrips supply, which means that these new buildings fill pretty quickly after leasing starts.

I do tend to tell people that owning a condo gives you the worst of both worlds: If it breaks, you have to pay to fix it, and you keep paying "rent" for as long as you live there (in the form of the condo fee).

My most recent print column speculates that with all these new apartments coming on line, Philly may become a majority-renter city in the near future. Most of those who I spoke with for the article don't see that happening, but it could have interesting implications for our politics (for instance, rent control is already being discussed after having been a non-issue for some 70-odd years save for a brief attempt to bring it back in the 1970s).
