More like, you want to ENCOURGAGE higher-end shopeers to show up.

wealthy people don't buy sneakers and hats? news to me. I get wanting to get rid of thrift stores, pawn shops, check cashing places and the like. You won't find stores like that in KOP or Cherry Hill or whatever. Like I said though, sneaker stores and and baseball hat stores are present not only in most regular malls but also every high end mall I've ever seen.

Your desire to remove them from the gallery makes zero economic or practical sense and smacks of a cultural distaste for urban (read:black) culture.

You want to get as many people in Center City as possible to patronize the restaurants, bars, hotels, retail, stores, museums, galleries etc etc etc.. One of the great gaffes in recent history was building that sports complex down in dead mans land with nothing going on.

In a way an arena downtown could do for Philadelphia what Madison Square Garden does for NYC. It brings the vibrancy and action where it should be. Downtown.
retrofitting a basketball arena into the gallery would create a cost the sixers won't want to deal with especially if there are (hopefully) no taxpayer dollars involved. I do agree however that a basketball arena downtown is a great idea. I hope they decide to not put a casino downtown and instead Josh Harris builds an arena at 8th and market where Market 8 is proposed. It would be simple enough to expand the already existing underground concourse to fully integrate the bottom level of the new arena to the gallery anyway.

Imagine ground floor street facing restaurants and bars. Shops on the concourse below with access to the El and Regional Rail and Patco. Basketball Arena above. Then a hotel and a multiplex above that. Haha can't accuse of me of not dreaming big.

Though it will never happen, it would be nice to see an NBA arena located in Center City.

I wouldn't be so sure it will never happen. Josh Harris is smart and I think he understands very well that he is not maximizing the value of the sixers by having them rent their home at the wells fargo center. I have to think that when the sixers lease is up (apparently as soon as 2016) they will not be looking for another long term lease at the wells fargo center. Will that new arena be downtown? Will it get done if Philly refuses to subsidize it? These are questions for another day but I wouldn't exactly call it a long shot to bet the sixers will be playing downtown within the next two decades.

Something like this...

With the typical stores you mentioned: Abercrombie, Hollister, etc and hopefully some higher end brand names as well.

Also, there are two pads on top of the Gallery that can accommodate highrises. I would love to see an office tower and a hotel go up on top of it.

It would never happen... there is just not enough room for an entire NBA arena in Center City unless you were to demolish large blocks. I would rather the city give initiatives to developers to start building up the Sports Complex as an entertainment district with retail and with some high to midrise hotels, condos, apartments and maybe an office tower or two.

Hey, now that the damage has been done, maybe someday they'll demolish the convention center and fit TWO downtown stadiums in the footprint.

I would hope the Gallery could look something like that. Sort of a mix of everything, like Time Square for example.

disagree. A basketball arena is not a baseball stadium or football stadium... or even an NHL arena. The length of a basketball court is less than 100' and modern arenas designed to keep seats as close as possible to the action take up even less space than have in the past. Their footprint does not have to be that large. The newest basketball arena in the NBA is the barclays center in brooklyn and it's footprint is barely 3.5 acres. Thankfully development has erased many of the large open lots that used to dot center city and more are on their way out. But there are still a number of places in center city where the area needed for basketball arena is already clear or minimal demolition would be needed to clear it. One large Center City block would be more space than needed and you definitely wouldn't need to "demolish large blocks" plural. How big do you think a basketball arena is?
