I did some digging in my backyard last week and the soil is that red colored hard composition. Is that something these citrus trees can live in?

Well, I was told to plant these trees during the "cool" months... so I started digging

I don't know much about trees but Mesa is a big citrus area so I think you'll be fine.

Beautiful!

Wish I knew what we are doing wrong with our citrus trees. I've planted 5 or 6 over the past 3 years, I think all from Coscto. Most died, and the remaining couple seem to grow maybe an inch or two taller a year. Very frustrating.

My 2 citrus trees are from Costco as well... I believe they were $29.99 a piece. I looked around at the Desert Horizon nursery on Ellsworth Rd before the Queen Creek Market Place and they have bigger ones with fruits for $148. That will be my next try...

Nice photo there! And the clear blue sky is something that can be appreciated. I must admit that Phoenix residents do have an advantage over those in the Midwest and East coasts of being able to sit in their backyards and do a BBQ in February. I know that that is a small thing, but it is an advantage. Enjoy this while you can because by April it will be 90-95 degrees and AC will have to be used.

It's even better in April. Right now it is too cold until noon. In April, it is nice from the time you get up to about 1 pm. It peaks around 3 and then is nice again by 5. It's late June before a significant part of the day is too hot to be comfortable outside. Then July and August, ugh, cabin fever time.

I could have worded my reply a bit more clearly... but I guess what I was trying to say is that people should enjoy this while they can. The average temperature in April is 85 degrees. That's not bad but it could be hotter than that where you are. It could be 95 by then too. I should say that Phoenix doesn't start to get "hot" until May because the average temperature by then is 95F. But it can differ by year as we have seen so far in 2012.
