I joined YouFit a couple of months and love it. It's only $10/month, no contract. NICE equiptment with 12in screens to watch TV in every cardio machine. No classes though for those who want that. But I love this gym.

LA fitness, should be $20-30/month, classes are included and plenty to choose from, very large gyms with lots of equipment so even when busy you're not waiting to get on the machines, depending on where in valley you live many are <5 yrs old and nice

That happened to me when I lived there 2 months right by St Joe's hospital in 2004. Wound up just running to get exercise.

I bought a Schwinn elliptical

It cost about the same as 2 years of gym membership ($650 + a mat) and it's always available, never any lines, I can leave my iPad on it all day, etc. Don't have to worry about catching athlete's foot in the locker room.

When we lived in north Glendale we went to the Aquatic Center a couple of blocks away. Really nice gym and pool, classes, etc. In the cooler weather I enjoyed jogging outside along the wash, where you could see rabbits, road runners, an occasional coyote, etc. Sure miss Arizona.

Good info here all!
I am in the Indian School and 44th St area. I purchased my home a few months ago so I here to stay. However, I too am on the look out for a good and decent gym. I don't love gyms for many reasons- over crowded, over priced, people not respecting others... etc. In the future I will hope have equipment at my home.
I would enjoy a spin class at times and kick boxing ocasionally as well as OP.
However, is anyone into Powerlifting and strongman workouts?
I care less about machines and much more about barbells and free weights in general.
What about Crossfit? I checked the other day $125 a month ( I think)

Any place to do squats and deads and use chalk!?

good info so far!!

I am actually a powerlifter and strongman and have many friends who are, as well. Check out this old school gym called Thorbecke's. It's in North Tempe (North of Tempe Town Lake and 202) off Curry near McClintock. It's one of the oldest powerlifting gyms in the country. It's small and dingy but they have all the equipment you need and some very strong guys who lift there. Welcome to Thorbecke's Gym, a Weightlifting Club!

There is also the Gold's Gym I lift at near Elliot and I-10. I mentioned it earlier in this thread. It's a good, place. Big and they don't care about you deadlifting, using chalk (as long as you clean it up), etc. Some very big and strong guys that train there, as well. They also do classes there. It's super cheap, too.

Independence Gym at Hayden and Thomas is a very good gym. They have two of everything and it is quite diverse; from powerlifter/strongman/bodybuilder to cross fit. It's inexpensive at $24/mo and is worth checking out.

Also, the owner of the Phx Metroflex is lining up a facility in Scottsdale. The location is yet TBD and he will offer all the best equipment such as Nebula. This will be another alternative for the strongman/powerlifter/bodybuilder athlete.

My wife and I pay $31 a month apiece at 24 Hour Fitness. Their classes are included in the membership, and there is a large gym at Baseline just west of 101 in Tempe, and at Arizona Ave and the Loop 202 in Chandler.

I think part of the problem is. gyms are far and few between, because the Metro is so huge. 24 hour fitness locations are not spread out like other cities. There is only one on the Glendale side of this Metro, the others are within Phoenix or in its suburbs the other side of Phoenix. Some of these other gyms are rather expensive, with a big initiation fee and some enhancement fee they charge to keep thier clubs up to date as they call it. I'm rather disappointed with the quality of them here. Then again I'm not really finding this area as Phsically fit as one might think it is for a western city. Most of the exercise seems to be moving ones foot from the gas to the brake all day long.
