Same here. I had to reboot my modem 2-3 times a week with Cox and it would get go from fast to slow and back again constantly. I am much happier with CenturyLink. It has been perfect since day one (month or so ago). Zero down time, zero slowdowns. I haven't touched the modem except to put my garage door interface on it.

You won't have the high speed internet with Century...you have to go to Cox for that and so far our service for the past year has been fantastic.

We have very high speed with CL. We pay $35 per month, but I just noticed that only lasts for the first 12 months. After that I think it goes up to $50. A little expensive.

I would disagree with the CL numbers, remember its not all about the download speed you also have to upload.

Below is what PC magazine found on their tests...on nation wide testing.

"Topping the list were Cox, Comcast and Charter Communications. All scored a “fantastic average” of 18 Mbps or more for downloads, PC Magazine reported. Cox has the best upload speed of the three, with an average of 4.8 Mbps."

Now if CL has installed some fiber lines that would make a difference. When I set up my house last year CL couldn't come close to the speed I could get with Cox.

I pay for 40 mbps down/5 mbps up. In test after test, I get actual numbers of 37-38 down with 32 being the lowest I have seen, 4.75-4.80 up. CL has a higher up speed but I don't need it so did not buy it. In short, with CL I am getting what I pay for.

I paid for 25 mbps with Cox. I averaged 14 down with frequent results less than 3 mpbs and never saw more than 21. Up I got .5-1.0. On top of that, the link went down 3 times a week. It was impossible to watch Netflix without the movie pausing several times to load. CL is heads and tails better. I am close to the CL fiber trunk though and the Cox infrastructure out my way is ancient and saturated.

I think the lesson here is that location matters a lot. As a rule, Cox has greater bandwidth available in more places - it is just the nature of cable. But if CL offers 40 in somebody's area it means they have the latest equipment installed and they are very likely going to be satisfied with the service.

CL also has a 30 day trial period where you can cancel and get all your money back if you are not satisfied. Maybe Cox does as well.

You may have needed a new cable modem. That might not have been an issue with the service at all.

No, I have the latest and greatest. Cox admitted it was their problem, but since every once in a while I got 80% of what I paid for, that was OK. I would have stayed with them even then as I, like a lot of others, heard and believed that CL was even worse. But they offer nothing to long time customers (me > 20years) to stay with them. So I took a chance on CL and I am glad (so far) that I did.

I paid $29.99 a month. However my internet signal would drop at 7PM every night, always on schedule. After 3 months of going back and forth with their customer service trying to convince me it was my modem, they finally owned up to the problem and fixed it. I moved 3 weeks later to a new apartment that had Cox service and never looked back.

I just got rid of them. i loved their service when they were qwest, but since the name change things got terrible. I would be without internet for days at a time while waiting for their service techs to get around to repairing the problem. All 3 times it was a problem on their end of the service, not mine. Never once was I offered a discount for the down time, and was billed full price even when I couldn't use the service for 1/4 of the month. I was once told "we don't do that" when I asked to have my bill reduced for the time I didn't have service.

I'm now with cox, and my total bill is about $10 higher a month, but the thing works. 2 months in and not once have I had an outage, nor have I needed to restart the modem. I had to restart the century link modem at least once every three days, even got a new modem and had the same problem. It was so often I reworked my power strips so the switch for the modem was easily accessible...
