My husband and I live in Wisconsin and are thinking of relocating to the phoenix area. My husband is currently a police officer with eight years experience. We are looking for a nice small town near phoenix looking for officers and that is great to raise kids.

I have a very high opinion of and respect for the Gilbert Police Department. I'm sure there are other great departments here, but I have had dealings with this department and they are great people to work with.

Police Department Home Page

Include that department in your research.

I feel like I'm on a roll here with recommending Surprise right after Captain Bill recommends Gilbert! I'm only saying this because I just saw an ad at supriseaz.com for police officers and cadets, and the pay would leave you with the ability to purchase a nice home out here. Surprise is a small city, but we are growing fast, so I'm not sure that it will give you the small town feel you might be looking for in the long run. Gilbert is definately not small town, but Queen Creek, near Gilbert, has even more small town feel than Surprise. They don't have as many shopping centers and stuff.

I was gonna say Gilbert is not a small town.

I believe her top two priorities are the great place to raise kids and a good PD for her husband.

Rather than taking it literally, I took the "small town" to mean some suburb outside the big city of Phoenix.

Gilbert qualifies as a great place to raise kids.

She wants a good police job for her husband. I assume that most officers want to work with one of the best departments around, and in my opinion, Gilbert is one of those desirable PD's.

The more desirable the PD is, the higher the bar to get into that department. The departments in damand set very high standards and only take what they perceive to be the best. That means they would turn down a lot of really good officers and take the cream of the crop (whatever those standards are)

Many candidates will begin their interview process with the best departments and go on down the line until they're selected. At least that is how a police officer friend of mine explained it to me one time.

I don't know anything about the PD in Surprise. JCO is the Surprise expert

Bill

I don't know anything about Surprise PD; my friends all work for Glendale, and I know Glendale is one of the least paid departments in the area.

That would be Gilbert, AZ. They are looking for experienced officers and can't hire them fast enough! Go for it! You will love Gilbert!

Surprise is nice as well. But then Surprise may not have as much need for Officers as Gilbert, because of its being the states safest city and all. Also according to GilbertMom the prices in Gilbert are going up while as the rest of the Phoenix area is declining in value. You may want to check out other areas just because it wil be so much easier to find a home that is affordable than in Gilbert, at least according to GilbertMom.

I would encourage your husband to research job opportunities here because there are so many rumors about the availability of jobs related to law enforcement particularly relating to police officers. I don't want to guess and make false statements. I just know that I've heard both extremes in regards to the availability of police officer employment in the valley. After doing this reseach, please post your results here.

Are you interested in a small town in the true sense or a nice suburb? Many of the Phoenix suburbs have over 200,000 people. They might seem small but they are very spread out and will seem larger once you live there. There are some smaller cities outside of the valley like Wickenburg, and Casa Grande.
