The town council and the school board are dominated by the "ruling" Mormon families of Gilbert. Unless one wants to live in what has become a Mormon/Evangelical Christian/Tea Party dominated city, they would be smart to choose Chandler.

It's not just the town council, the Gilbert school board has also been dominated by Mormons and conservatives. It's not a coincidence that a Mormon temple was just completed in Gilbert. They nearly killed the Apple factory deal due to two conservative members. I wouldn't say Chandler is conservative as a whole. It's moderate. Kyrene and Ocotillo are liberal whereas the areas bordering Gilbert are more conservative. Many Ocotillo residents are employees at Intel which tend to consist of young educated Asians. The Lone Butte Casino in Chandler was originally set to be built in Gilbert but they received opposition from Gilbert. They wisely moved their location to Chandler. if you tend to be conservative or from the Tea Party, Gilbert is ideal.

Well, according to this list:
http://alt.coxnewsweb.com/statesman/...081205libs.pdf

Chandler ranks as the 47th most conservative city with a population of 100,000 or more. Not as much as Gilbert or Mesa, but still conservative overall.

You realize that Gilbert was 7th on that list so that's pretty significant when you compare it to Chandler. Peoria was 9th and Gilbert feels much more conservative than Peoria.

Interestingly enough, cities that were more conservative than Gilbert do not feel as conservative as Gilbert like Plano TX which is wealthy suburb of Dallas and Hialeah, Fl which is in South Miami and the Miami metro is pretty liberal and diverse.

When I refer to conservative cities, I'm speaking primarily to social issues which Gilbert is much more conservative than Chandler.

According to this New Times article, Gilbert was among the 13 most conservative cities in America: "No other Arizona city made the top-13 list, which is topped by Oklahoma City."

But not a majority in the political landscape elsewhere.

I have no issue with the Mormon temples , we have one just a few blocks from our house in Calgary. I call them the Neighborhood Watch, always on patrol in the neighborhood.
