Hello Phoenix folks,

My husband's company might relocate to Phoenix and we'd follow if it does. So we're considering areas to live, single family house. Came upon a website tonight that gives the Deer Valley neighborhood a grade of "D" on crime. Can someone tell me why Deer Valley gets such a bad rating, and what neighborhoods might be better areas for safety? Thank you for your consideration!

I think many Phoenicians have a very distorted view of what a "safe" neighborhood is. The Deer Valley area has quite a bit of commercial/light industrial areas (and a very busy airport for light/private planes) - so some areas look "tough" compared to newer & purely residential areas, that said- I'd drive through the "worst" areas of Deer Valley at 2am in a convertible with the top down without a care. There were/are neighborhoods in Detroit where no one stops for red lights or stop signs after dark.

I'd look a little closer at what the reported "crimes" are - quite often neighborhoods in Phoenix get dinged for minor property crimes, especially if there are apartment complexes around. Meth heads love to go through cars & unguarded parking lots are like honey to a bear.

Like Zippyman said, I would not consider the Deer Valley area as a high crime area at all. Now I don't know about small break-ins and things like that, but you never hear of stuff happing in the area on the news like you do in other parts of Phoenix so I'd say it's pretty good.

I have lived in Deer Valley almost a year now. I have never heard a siren or had anything happen to indicate the area is not safe.

Deer Valley is a large area to paint with one big crime brush. Agree with the others. Property crimes like thefts from cars in apartment complexes, or minor breakins in commercial areas, can drive up the statistics in any number of areas, but that doesn't make those areas unsafe places to live. So, it's still an optio, as are any number of other areas on the NW side, if that's where you are concentrating your search.

OP, did you look at the crimereports map? You may have to put in the city again, but here is the link. I got this off of the Peoria, AZ PD website.

The Deer Valley area is quite large. Yes, there are pocket areas where there is more crime. The area near 27th area and Lone Cactus Road is one that comes to mind. However, most of the area is fine. You need to look at the crime maps, and in the end, drive through the neighborhoods and find a neighborhood you like, and a particular home you like. Welcome to the Valley!
