Have you tried Priceline? I just booked my apartment hunting trip for next month, and got a great price: the lowest rate available at the hotel where I'll be staying (in the Biltmore area) is $237/night, but I'll only be paying $90/night.

Seems it might be worth a shot, especially if you won't have a vehicle.

Oh, ok, I thought you HAD to stay in downtown for some kind of business trip. In your case you have a lot of options of where to stay. Downtown Phoenix is deader than dead; downtown Albuquerque is actually more exciting. DT Phoenix is basically a 3x3 block collection of parking garages, walls, and a few office buildings. After the ball game is over people go straight to their cars and go home, and that's pretty much it, other than literally one or two bars right next to the stadium. Unfortunately, all the hotels in Phoenix, even "motels", seem to be outrageously priced this time of year. My fam is coming in to see me next month and they can't find anything that's not a rip-off either. I'm not that familiar with West Phoenix/ Tolleson-- other than that it's widely considered the bad part of town. Someone else might be able to help you out there. What else do you plan on doing outside the two events? If you want nightlife, Tempe or Scottsdale is where it's at. As you can tell, all the "stuff" is scattered all over Phoenix, there's no one area of concentration that has it all, so it requires a lot of driving around on the freeways. I'd go to hotels.com or one of the hotel chain's websites and see what's available that night, then you could ask us if the one you have in mind is good or not.

i'm pretty familiar with this section of the city - the show is at cricket pavilion, correct?

are your evenings going to be pretty much centered around these events?

is the show on a weekday (can be hard travelling 10 west from downtown for a 7pm show on a weeknight)

if you like clubs and finer dining then scottsdale is a good call - if you are younger and like more of the college bar scene (they are friendly to non students as well) then tempe is a lot of fun

if you want to stay on the westside and be close to bars then the arrowhead area of peoria/glendale near bell ave and 83rd ave is excellent ...... about 15-20 minutes to cricket and 10-15 minutes to westgate (by the coyotes stadium, cardinals stadium and a new entertainment district)

there is also a lot of bars and restaurants that you can walk to from the hotels (DUI laws here are no joke)

"Deader than dead" -- That's a considerable exaggeration. Downtown can be lively when major events are scheduled; other times it can be sleepy. It's feast or famine, but there are always pockets of activity if you know where to look.

The question is what are you looking for? Are you just looking for a convenient, central location? In that case, Downtown or Midtown might work. On the other hand, are you looking for activity right outside your door? Are you looking for a resort setting with a big pool? Location is only part of the picture; it's equally important to look at what you want out of a hotel and its surrounding neighborhood.

And, yes, Phoenix hotel rates are highly seasonal. This is the peak of the high season, and you will pay for that. Come back in July or August and you'll get some unbelievable bargains at upscale resorts.
