decent zip codes
I'm checking for a friend who is considering Phoenix where in the city proper is a decent neighborhood?? Basically what I mean is middle-class folks. He is going to grad school out there but also works full-time so he is not a typical "student". All of the homes online are listed by zip code so I figured that would be the easiest way to check things out and weed out certain parts of the city that appear nice on camera but really are shady areas.
Thanks for your help!!

Does it have to be IN phx? There are many areas that are technically in other cities but are down the street from Phx.

That isn't always a fair stereotype. I live in a zip code that is ecclectic. My area is nice and quiet and everyone is very mellow, keeps up their homes. A few blocks away looks totally different. We have Bethany Home Road which is a main thorough fair and the homes on some parts don't look nice at all and yet on some of the interior streets they look very nice depends on where you are.
So you might want to consider what is the best place as far as convinience and price and what works overall for you as well as what you like.

Oops! You said "city proper" is that Phoenix or Tempe?
85018 or 85016 might fill your needs, but, really all of downtown Phoenix is O.K. We don't really have any "slums." Just a bunch of people trying to make it through the day...

I live in 85003, and while there is probably some nice places to live in this zip code, I am certain your friend doesn't want to live near me..... Phoenix is a strange place. It changes from block to block, and sometimes from street to street.
In recent years there has been a re-facing of the downtown area, but this has not made it any safer to live downtown.

Downtown is one of the safest areas in the Valley, having among the lowest murder, assault, robbery, and car theft rates in the state (I think there were 2 homicides downtown in 2007 and they involved people who came into the area with an intent to commit another crime). Also, in downtown Phoenix personal crime risk is low, which is a given since this area has a huge police presence being near multiple headquarters for various law enforcement agencies.
"Phoenix is safe by big-city standards. Taking Phoenix's growing population into account, the crime rate per 100,000 decreased by 31% between 1996 and 2005. This represents a 31% decrease in the property crime rate and 27-percent decrease in the violent crime rate per 100,000."
Outside of downtown, futherwest and east and south...its a more dangerous.

you are just plain silly if you believe much of what you read on the internet. Just because someone published some stats on the internet does not make them accurate or true. Believing them is like reading a book on how to fly an airplane, and considering yourself a pilot. I live in a bad neighborhood, and personally knew 2 people who were murdered in 2007. I am sure they were not the 2 you mentioned, because they were not people who came into the area to commit another crime. One was a domestic violence shooting, and the other was ruled "officially" a drug overdose, but was most assuredly a homicide. There were countless others to which I cannot personally testify, but did nonetheless happen. Almost nobody publishes stats on the internet without an "agenda." Any premise you want to justify can be justified ( and discredited) with just a few clicks of a mouse, but reality cannot be seen from behind a keyboard. I have been robbed, shot at, had property stolen, so many times in the last ten years, that I stopped counting. Only a few times did I report these incidents to the police, because frankly, the police can't really do anything about it. I am not unique in my neighborhood, nor do I particularly go looking for trouble, but you can't simply quote some stats you pulled from the net about what goes on downtown, and call that reality.

You're full of it and you know it!!! The stats I'm "pulling" off the internet are PD and FBI stats. I think I'll listen to them before you, someone obviously trying to make the area look worse than it is. The dangerous parts of Phoenix are the west and south side. Downtown is far from being dangerous. I live downtown, 6th ave and Roosevelt for over a year, never heard a gun shot, never seen police in the neighborhoods, and have NEVER seen anything on the news about crime downtown. There was one murder so far this year downtown. It happened at a night club after they closed and may be drug related (again, people coming in from other regions). I don't think the FBI has an agenda to make Phoenix look better than another city, that's just ridiculous. But I do think you have an agenda.
You've been shot at and all that and haven't reported it to the police or someone else didn't??? Come on, absolute b.s. buddy.
