I agree, Saguaros are beautiful. Always clean up after your mess.

Take I-17 north to the Table MEsa Rd. exit and head west to the other side of the freeway and go north. There are tons of spots out there, it's a very popular place to shoot, but large enough and with enough hills and valleys to be safe and secluded. You can get pretty deep in there before you hit the wash, which needs a truck, but you should be able to find a spot in there somewhere.

There's a shooting range just south on 85 at Robins Butte. Also Sonoran Desert National Monument is nearby - behind the landfill. Harqualhala Mtns, Hassyampa River. Lots of places.

Just goto Usery Mountain shooting range and not use the saguaros as your target practice.

Yep, do yourself (and us) a favor and go to Rio, Ben Avery, or South Mountain shooting ranges.

For the seven dollars I spend once a month @ Ben Avery
it's well worth it plus I've met some Fantastic people that
have shared great tips & stories plus I really enjoy chatting

Seriously - go to the range.

Anecdote - not sure if it's true or not, but the source has been reliable.

A friend was shooting in the desert, and was observed by a sheriff's deputy for a period of time.

The friend was confronted by the deputy, who offered that he had been waiting for my friend to shoot at a cactus, and he was surprised that the friend hadn't done so.

However, the friend was guilty of "littering", because he left all of the fired bullets in the desert...

Friend claims to have gotten a ticket.

Wasn't me, I wasn't there, I dunno...

Seems better to use real targets at a real range and avoid any potential hassle.

FWIW, there is a serious point to the "city limits" argument above - Tucson city limits begin WAAAAAY before the actual "city" can be seen on the expressway(You'll see the city limits sign 40 miles before you'll see ANY city coming from NM!) , and Buckeye is legendary for annexing halfway to California as "city" to collect on any future tax revenue. In RE class they mentioned it was the "largest" city in the US by area...

Be safe...
