PhxBarb,

I wouldn't be in too much of a rush. I'd take it slow and interview plenty of people. In this
post-Madoff era, we all know what happens when you pick the wrong person. There are plenty of reputable people out there, but plenty of snakes too.

If you're looking for quick advice on a specific problem, like whether to take a lump sum or an annuity on your recent lottery winnings, you could pay someone hourly to take a look at your situation, and any competent person could probably help you quickly, as long as the problem is pretty self contained. Then you could continue looking at that person as well as others and pick the one you're most comfortable with for your long term needs.

I would do a google search for "How To Pick a Financial Planner". You should find lots of good articles that list good questions to ask when interviewing planners. Remember, you're interviewing them, so don't let anyone push you around. I remember a funny encounter I had years ago, when I knew absolutely nothing about personal finance. I was leaving my first job, and when I asked about transferring my pension money, the CFO told me to talk to this financial guy who did some work with the company. This guy wanted me to put all my money in some investment or family of funds or something, which he of course, would make a hefty commission on. I told him I wanted him to mail me some info on these investment before making a decision. He said he wanted a committment before going through the trouble of mailing the info to me! When I resisted, he called me Sweetheart! Needless to say, that conversation was over.

Recommendations from people who have worked with someone would obviously be good, but don't forget Bernie Madoff had people begging to get in based on personal recommendations.

I would still consider personal recommendations strongly, but I'd be skeptical. Also, I would look for someone who is a Certified Financial Planner(CFP). Here's a link to the search results I just got by choosing Phoenix on the CFP Boards page for finding planners - I got 345 results:

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. - Search for a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional

Good Luck
