I'm moving to the Phoenix area from Charlotte, NC and need help determining a safe place to live. I'd also like to be within walking distance to the "hip" OR close to work. If the "hip" area isn't near my work, I'd like to be close to a light rail stop or express bus line.I'd like to stay on the East side of the area b/c of all the traffic stories. I'll be working close to the corner of E. Camelback and N 24th St. I need suggestions on specific apartment complexes or condos. Thanks

Living in the Biltmore Area (centered at Camelback and 24th) would be a great choice. It's an upscale, centrally located area with good access to Downtown cultural attractions, Scottsdale nightlife, and nearby mountain parks with hiking trails. The Optima is a very nice condo building in that area. A little farther east is the Arcadia neighborhood, which would also be a good place to live. The Cascades is a very nice apartment complex within Arcadia, but there are many to choose from.

At the present time, transit in Biltmore and Arcadia is limited to local bus service. In the future -- probably about a decade -- an add-on light rail line will graze the western edge of the Biltmore area on its way up toward northeast Phoenix. If you want to be near the initial light rail line, which will commence service in late 2008, you'll want to live in Downtown or Midtown. Roosevelt Square is a very nice apartment complex to look at Downtown. There are also several new condominium developments proposed or under construction along the rail line in Downtown and Midtown.

I agree with the below post just don't expect that type of uptown as we call in it Charlotte and downtown as we call it in Phoenix

there are nice houses for rent in the homestead neighborhood, a few streets south of camelback, at thomas & 24th.

My wife and I lived there for a few years and liked the central location.

What are your feelings about Queens Creek? I'm moving there as soon as my house is built in 6 months.

It's the opposite of the neighborhoods discussed so far in this thread. The neighborhoods mentioned so far are close to downtown and appeal those who want a more urban lifestyle. Queen Creek, on the other hand, is far out in the suburbs and is generally popular with families who want to buy a spacious, recently built house at a relatively low price and who are willing to endure a long commute.

In response to the available transit near 24th/Camelback....Although the city bus is available it is unreliable and very slow. It takes hours to get anywhere in this city by bus. The valley is huge and in order to really live here and get around it would be best to have your own vehicle/transportation. Also remember that it is very hot here in the summer and walking is not much fun. I've lived in Arizona for 33 years and I can't imagine being without a vehicle of some sort. As for the "hip" places the Biltmore area is very nice, but for the night life you will want to go into Scottsdale which is about a 10 minute drive East of the Camelback/24th area. Good luck with your move and don't forget to bring your sunscreen

It's Queen Creek no S It's far and the gas is expensive. If you don't have to travel to anywhere I guess it's ok.

Well then, I guess I did the right thing. I work from home, am a writer, and only go the city when I feel like it. So, perfect.

Plus both my sons and their wives just built new houses in Queens Creek. They commute, but then, they don't mind. Well, I shouldn't say that. The next job they're doing is two hours from Queens Creek, they aren't too happy about that commute.

It's Queen Creek not Queens Creek no S. You have to know that since you will be a resident soon. Since you don't have to travel anywhere it's as good as any other suburb I guess.
