I know it is gone, but what is going to be in its place? It closes in November I believe. Anyone know?

Rumor is that it's being bought by the Boston-based firm (The Davis Companies) who was behind the recent rehab of the Union Trust Building. That same firm is also converting the former Art Institute dorm at Shannon Hall into a 205-unit apartment building.

It's a fairly big site (1.5 acres), meaning you could get a nice mini-development going. Considering there are already plans to replace the Shakespeare Street Giant Eagle across the street with a new mixed-use development, that stretch of Penn is going to feel quite different in like five years.

Not if the NIMBYs have anything to say about it!

IMHO they won't have much hope of blocking the Shakespeare St redevelopment. The area is mostly zoned CP (Commercial Planned development) which means the owners have wide latitude to construct a new master plan.

The Club One site is a different matter. It's zoned Highway Commercial now (like the shopping center next door) and would need some sort of rezoning in order to be upzoned, which gives NIMBYs a lot of potential pull. But it's also further away from the Village of Shadyside - the gated community which has been giving the Shakespeare Street development the most trouble.

I bet the Davis project will be built before the lots across Centre from Target that have been sitting empty for over a year since demo.

Couldn't pay me to live in that part of town. Too loud. Too busy. Too expensive.

Yeah. The developer will not build without an anchor tenant, and has no anchor tenant. It's a shame because the Chinese restaurant's building was actually pretty nice, and at this point it was knocked down for no good reason whatsoever.

The city should keep this in mind, considering downtown the Troiani family want to demolish a bunch of historic buildings on Market Street for a "mixed-use highrise" that it's pretty clear has no finalized plans or financing yet.

Spent a lot of time there back in the 80's. The owners were hands-on and very active with the membership and community. Opened during the racquetball boom and always seemed to be current with all the trends. Not sure if they even have courts anymore. Had a lot of fun there, hope the owners did well when they sold.

He already demoed the old Papa J's house, which was the oldest home/structure in downtown I believe? Just let it go to hell on purpose then cried it was structurally unsound. The typical Troiani line. Said the same thing last week about the Froggy's building in Market Square. A piece of work. He insulted the Carnegie commission by basically asking they foot the bill to build him a new place in Carnegie that burnt down, from what I was told. This guy is not well liked. ...

Was that ever offered? Someone was going to pay you to live there?

Personally, I'd never live in Dormont or Mt. Lebo but I understand many people do like living in those communities.
