Big debate in the sports world of Pittsburgh... could we handle an NBA franchise? I'd be all for it but I won't lie, I'd choose Pens games over our NBA team at this point... but if they shared Consol, at least they'd never both be in town on the same nights. Not saying it's gonna happen... but interesting, none-the-less...

Pittsburgh does not have enough of a population to support an NBA team. 50 years ago we did...but not anymore.

As a former Detroit native and lifelong Pistons fan, I would be thrilled--provided Joe Dumars was part of the deal.

I really can't imagine NBA leaving MI...it is so heavily thick into the culture there...and their team has been so successful. I didn't read the article, but Detroit teams just don't leave.

Having grown up in MI...I'm not particularly interested in sports, but everyone I know in MI is obsessed about all sports. When people talk about a Steeler obsession, it strikes me as something I'd be quite familiar with growing up in MI.

If the Pistons left Detroit...it would be devastating to the entire state...I can't imagine it...they'd lose faith in just about everything.

There isn't much going on in Detroit in general compared to other cities...so the sport games go to all new levels of frenzy. Half of the 'tourism Detroit' related campaigns seem to pretty much always tie sports into why a person should visit.

By the way, there are plenty of metro areas around the same size or smaller than Pittsburgh which have NBA teams already. I think the argument would have to be that we aren't likely to be a basketball town, not that we are too small.

Agreed. Tons of fans follow teams of places they don't even live so population isn't necessarily that important, IMO.

The fact of the matter is, the Pistons aren't going anywhere. Even if the owners made the announcement that the team was going to move, there would be the same kind of backlash as there was when the Pens' owners announced their intention to leave Pittsburgh, and look at us now.

Yeah I'm not really buying this. The Pistons will never leave Detroit, and even if by some very odd chance they did, I can imagine KC or Vegas getting a team over us due to the market difference. I don't think basketball would do so hot in Pittsburgh, we're conventional to the tune of football/baseball. Hockey only worked(almost didn't work on quite a few occasions) when the team became an elite performer within the league, otherwise nobody cared. But as for basketball..on the college level, yes, but not so much on the pro level. If the team came here and struggled out of the gate...that'd be the end of it. People would go check it out if the team were to do well and be in contention, but other than that, I think it would be a failure and the team would even fall behind the Pirates in terms of general interest. In this case, I think less is more.

Pittsburghers love sports. You get one good playoff run and people will be hooked.
