Oh...so now we're speaking about NOW? So forget all that stuff about slavery, huh?

Your ancestors came from Europe. Your non-denial is an admission. Again, if Europe was so damn great, why are you here? You're here because it's the "continent of death." 50-60 million of their citizens killed in the last war there alone. And it's only been "fixed" because the United States fixed it...otherwise, they'd STILL be slaughtering the hell out of each other by the millions.

So if you wanna go tit for tat, we can do that all day.

In all my 15 years of working at various hitech companies in the Silicon Valley I've only seen 2 black engineers. One was from Nigeria educated in France, and another was from London, England ethnically South African. They absolutely had no cultural, spiritual or intellectual connection to the US born blacks.

They just are much more educated and science inclined than the majority of AA's in the US and are not at all afraid to 'act white'.

That is all.

What is "acting white?" Working in Silicon Valley? Or are you just trying to exalt yourself by letting us know that you're special cuz you work in Silicon Valley?

Besides, how in the hell would you know what cultural, spiritual, or intellecutal connections they have to African Americans. Are you black? If not, then you're speaking as an outsider. And outsiders simply don't know...which is why they offer conjecture, much like you're doing.

Exactly! They would be singing a different tune if the U.S. bordered Nigeria or the Congo.

Immigrants who come here legally are not your average Joe Schmoes. Compare your average Congolese to your average black American and you would get a much different picture.

1.Again you don't know me or my ancestors so I will ignore your personal comments.

2. I am American and my ancestors was one of the people who fought in the Revolutionary war. The American Flag is my Native Flag & English is my native Language.

So my ancestors as other Americans help create this country you want to come to. We fixed our country from Colony to Super Power.

So fix yours

Most of my life has been spent straddling the line... on the one hand, I have an African father who in spite of being witness to half a life-time's worth of racist BS himself, he didn't come to America until he went to college... he already had an identity (of being normal). Being the minority in a country - and being the most despised minority at that - gives you a self-image that's anything but normal... even only fifty years ago, the media taught black americans that they were ugly, stupid, subservient failures... they continued to do this less-explicitly through Hollywood well into the early 90's.

On the other hand, I have an African-American mother whose own father and his 7 brothers used to shine shoes to eat scraps in Arkansas during Jim Crow. He's told me multiple times that he considered suicide when he was a kid because he "knew" that he was the absolute garbage of society. This society conditions blacks to think they're garbage and should only amount to garbage.

I've had to come to terms with my own questions of identity... to some on this board the obvious answer would be to ignore the n*****r mentality but they haven't been in these shoes... it's not that simple. To have one side of the family with a history of grief and pain solely because of their skin color and the other with no such history whatsoever is... interesting to say the least.

For those who want to point out Obama's election as the "end of racism", it's no coincidence that he's African. Obama grew up in a single-parent home and attended a very racist school in Hawaii for most of his teenage years. However, he knew he wasn't a n*****r since he was old enough to walk. It has as much to do with one's parents and their parents' background as it does with anything... back in the days of Jim Crow, being a black n*****r - a slave of the mind - was safer than being an intellectually free black man or woman. It's still true to an extent today.

Tragic doesn't begin to describe the last 100 years of African American history.
Wow, great post.
I am neither AA nor African but I have no doubt this is the truth.
I always feel so much more conscious of my race when I am in North America. I really can't imagine what it is like for AAs to have always had to deal with that.
I was in the US at the time of the Superbowl Janet Jackson fiasco and heard some African American women bemoaning the incident..how it made them ashamed to go into work at their majority white offices as they felt they would be leered at. Made me sad to hear. It's like little things like that speak for and blanket the entire group. I highly doubt a white American woman would feel similarly if Britney Spears for e.g. had done what Janet did.

About Hollywood, I would say it is actually explicit still. Not as out there as when you watch Mad men for e.g. but I do think blacks are offered very few "normal" non-descript roles. American tv is just terrible for the self esteem of non white Americans.

Considering that US Blacks come from the woefully inadequate educational system in this country, which has deemphasized math and science (and many other important subjects, for that matter), it is not surprising that many black high technology professionals are not from America. You could make the same case for foreigners of every race vs native born Americans of every race.

BTW, studying and being science inclined does not constitute "acting white."

The same for me, and I am as black as Barack Obama.

Actually, this country would never have gone from colony to super power (which in itself is a dubious honor) had it not been for centuries of uncompensated and undercompensated labor - the latter of which is still happening - from Africans and their descendants.
