[quote=SoCalCroozer;18973490]Americans obsessed with their sports. While the people of Allen Texas rally around their high school football team and sports teams they can sleep well at night knowing that only less than 1% of their graduates will ever go on to do anything lucrative with sports or athletics. Meanwhile a high school in India or Sweden is spending millions on a new science or dare I say it..........MATH LAB..........ughhhhhhhh math is like sooooooooo 1990s........

So, what's the problem? People enjoy different things. Life isn't all about math labs.
The point is the money could be better spent on helping ALL STUDENTS....not just propping up high school athletics. It reflects upon American culture and why the entire US public education system is a complete and utter failure and why American kids are unable to compete in a global economy. It speaks volumes as to where our celebrity obsessed and sporstaholic culture begins. You ask American kids who was kicked off American Idol last week most could probably tell you. Now go ask them which branch of US government is known for being the most representative and why? Hell most adults probably can't name the Secretary of the Treasury or the Fed Chairman or what quantitative easing and hyperinflation mean......let alone who the current Defense Secretary is. Or better yet how many high schools kids understand the Food Modernization and Safety Act and the impact it has on this country and their right to choose healthy food. Now go ask any adult male between the ages of 20 and 40 a myriad of useless sports statistics.
You misunderstand how it works.. The local community helps to build a football stadium, in the same manner they help to build arenas and convention centers all over this country.. The activities held in these locations are then profitable, and thus able to fund money back to help ALL students. How do you think many of the activities in schools are funded nowadays because its not taxpayer funded anymore.
When I had my football game, we turned over nearly $50K per game into the local community, and this is in addition to the money we spent to fund game and the centers we held games in.
Stadiums are from the local community taking out loans.
That is not state nor federal money.
The well to do school districts spend much of their money through school bonds and higher local taxes.
Again, dont see a problem with it.. the state is cutting the budget for the school, the local municipalities are picking up and expanding the funding..
Of course you don't........but I wouldn't expect someone with "competition breeds winners" in their avatar as someone that would really understand America's obsession with sports and how it affects our kids. But that's ok........maybe your son Jerome who's the all star running back for Allen Eagles will go on to take mediocre college classes but turns pro making millions in the NFL.......or maybe your son is the white high school quarterback super star that might barely make it into D1 college but has no chance in the NFL so he's got to rely on his 5th rate education to land him a $30K a year job out of college......where he'll be competing against Chin Chan that was talking calculus at age 10. Or worse your kid might be the overweight defensive lineman everyone forgets about who goes on to work at Fat Fryer's burger joint reliving his glory days by attending football games at Allen stadium while downing a case of Natural light while he swallows his glucotrol because he's got type II diabetes at age 25. LMAO!
