When I had a student (while working at a school library) who was struggling to accept his homosexuality, how do you think he'd feel if we had banned all books that even mentioned the subject? I'll tell you - it would make him feel ashamed, afraid, and like we didn't care about him. I'm glad we can now provide books on these subjects, and whether or not you want to believe it, most of them are actually appropriate for teen readers. Have you read these titles, or are you just frightened by the mere suggestion of gayness?
Unfortunately, a certain segment of the population in fact DOES want to make "those people" feel ashamed & afraid.
Shall we burn books? Any of these people read Fahrenheit 451?
LOL... you conservatives are so paranoid. Even my gay friends aren't aware of this supposed agenda, so methinks it's just a figment of your imaginations. And what's wrong with socialization? Should we be teaching them to be ashamed instead?
Who is "they" exactly? I thought we determined that was a joke, and only gained attention because of people like Maja - who continuously obsess over homosexuality, and spread the word on things the gay community isn't even aware of yet.
Let's stick to the topic of school libraries, shall we. You can order all the trash you want for the public library, which I now avoid.

You actually said ONE thing that makes sense, how parents need to be aware of what their children are reading or checking out at the library. We are not responsible for teaching them what to believe, what is appropriate, or what set of values to follow... that is the parents' responsibility, and they need to be more involved in their children's lives.
Some parents might be fine with this content - heck, some parents might even be gay themselves. Whoah!! So if you DON'T like the content of a particular book or subject, you need to openly impart that belief to your children. No child will ever be forced to read anything, especially if the parents openly object on religious or moral grounds. Didn't you know that?
How could a high schooler be a pedophile? Talk about deflection, LOL. I'll have to get back to you on those specific titles, but most "gay-related" books that make it into school libraries (and public YA collections) are completely age-appropriate... usually mentioning nothing more graphic than your typical teen book, but some people find it more graphic based on homosexual content alone. A kiss between young Romeo & Juliet is romantic, but a kiss between Davey & John is somehow disgusting porn - go figure.
Let's talk about the books mentioned here. I haven't seen too many 31 year olds in high school. These books depict a lot more than kissing and you, being a librarian are fully aware of it. Adult/child sexual relations? BJ's? Orgies? These books have no place in a school library. Laugh all you want. Its good for people to wake up and become aware that these kind of books for children are defended by some.
No, I didn't miss that - in fact I participated in the debate on this forum. But it was widely agreed that this all STARTED as a joke, and was taken to ridiculous levels by the viral internet chatter. Get it? Sesame Street was never planning a gay wedding, and I doubt the gay community as a whole gives a crap if Bert & Ernie get married.

I told you I'm not familiar with these particular titles, which leads me to believe they're not a normal part of any state reading lists... I've been looking at those darned lists ALL SUMMER, and have only seen the typical books thus far. The big titles this year were Rebecca, A Brave New World, The Natural, The Once and Future King, and some of the old classics. If one school district picked a few controversial books, I'm sure they were voluntary reads, as none of these made California's state reading lists - and if California doesn't require them, who would?

I defend the right to read whatever you want, and to allow your children to read whatever you feel is appropriate... we all have a different idea of what's "right or wrong," so who are you to speak for every family?
