They know more about finance, government and business than most adults in this country. My children never get in trouble at school, contribute to their community by serving the homeless, helping needy children, etc., and always score in the top 2% of standardized testing.
If that makes me a helpless parent, fine. Too bad they're aren't more helpless parents in the world.

I've researched some different sites that summarize the book and have discussions by people who have read the book. And a lot of those discussions deal with what happened to the main character after the book ended, since the book is open ended.

The stats on the number of students who speak English as a second language and those who come from impoverished households are scary given that these are predominantly the students who's parents are least involved, who will be disruptions in the classroom preventing other students the opportunity to learn, and who suck up disproportionate amount or school resources.

Yes, I'm sacrificing. And it's in the form of the price I'm forced to put on my child's education. And my taxes are still being collected to pay for the public schools.

But it normalizes such relationships and makes them acceptable in the minds of children. Such are neither normal not acceptable.

Minds can be poisoned just as easily as bodies. Where is the disconnect on that fact?

"Progressive" is such a PC and a very slippery word.

Not all of us want to normalize such things. I agree that efforts on "getting there" presents a problem.

Agree. Except that I would change that to "...anything dealing positively with gay sex...". For one brief second, I'll take an objective compassionate angle here and say that why would you as a parent would instill in your child the concept that this is a good or acceptable choice knowing the ostracism and life they'll face as a result? OK, back to our normal programming where I'll just agree with AeroGuyDC's statement above at face value. (We all know I'm neither obejctive nor compassionate. Right, libs?)
I agree with everything you said!

I also pay 20K for my child to attend private school, while still paying taxes on the failing school system in my area pushing a liberal agenda - which has really crossed way too many lines involving the education of our children.

You've got at least dozen posts saying "5th grade."
Is that your idea of High School?

Here is yet another link confirming the assigned books, the inappropriateness of them, etc. - this time from a New Jersey newspaper. It is interesting to read the comments at the bottom, one from a parent who had a student in the school. She describes even more outrageous content, including the graphic rape of boys by men.

Risque summer reading selections have parents upset, school officials scrapping books in Monroe Township | NJ.com

"One such selection, “Norwegian Wood,” which was on the required reading list for incoming tenth-grade honors English students, includes a graphic depiction of a lesbian sex scene between a 31-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl."

"Another selection, from the seniors honors class, “Tweak (Growing up on Methamphetamines),” describes a drug-fueled, homosexual orgy."

I think it would depend on the child.
Also, we were initially talking about teens 13 - 18.
Again, at 13 I would again think it depends on the child.

You do understand why we read the books rather than rely on Cliff's Notes?

Which is why I said, "I haven't read the book." lol
He asked how I could know about the book if I hadn't read it.

It's clear that some of the people in this thread advocating for this book need to work on reading and comprehension skills. Your children would be fine reading this book, if they have your reading skills, they will most likely not understand it anyway. Or perhaps they would never make it into honors or AP English anyway.

Nope. But many Middle Schools start at 5th grade. These books were reported as on a "required" reading list for high school and "recommended" reading list for Middle School.

I don't care if its required or recommended. And I don't care if Middle School starts at 5th or 6th grade. As one mom, whose child read one of them pointed out, it would be rated "R" if books were rated. Teachers shouldn't be recommending or requiring kids read these disturbing books of child rape and orgies and suicide. If you want your kids reading them, do it on your own time; but don't force my child to read it or have to sit in class and listen to other kids give oral book reports on them. Get them out of the public school libraries.

How about having kids spend a little more time on history and math, which they are doing dismal on in national tests.

Oh, and it doesn't matter if the kids are "honors" students or not. Like it takes more brains to comprehend porn. But, I do know that the schools like to use that excuse. They fill the honors classes with indoctrination junk and then they have the best and brightest kids at their mercy, saying "well they are smarter so they should be able to handle more mature themes (like pedophilia, rape, orgies, etc.) and they can always drop out of the class if it proves too much for them..." placing the kid in a position of reading the inappropriate, disturbing material or losing their honors class credit. (The whole Gifted/Talented & Honors programs are rapidly becoming a venue for social justice and sexual indoctrination, btw for those parents not there yet.)

Anyway, I know this won't sway all the posters who are defending these books who will continue to rant and rail about biased links, book burning, homophobia, prudish people, blah, blah, blah...But, hopefully this will further enlighten those responsible parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles who are trying to keep up with and understand what is going on and being done to our children these days.
