One week the first full year is common.
One week AFTER the first full year is also common.
Many place 2 weeks starts at 5 years.

Still should not be mandated. The Euros have some good ideas. 12% of the year on vacation is not one of them.
Damn, I get 8 hours of vacation ever pay period.....(every 2 weeks). I guess that is one reason my ocmpany is always in the "best places to work."

24% say yes
I would say thats about right. 24% of people go to work and put in hours and go home, with no thought of improving ones self and/or going beyond whats asked of them. Those are the ones that want Goverment to make their employer give them more. They are the same ones that "get sick" and use the exact number of sick days they are offered every year.

The truth is employees that are skilled and valuable to their employer are given vacation and a lot of other job benefits. Or they lose them to a competitor. That is want another poster meant by when they said "they earn their time off". A foreign consept to some of you.

every job I have ever had, has had some kind of vacation/sick/personal days offered

NO, the government should NOT mandate it

my current jobs has 26 pay periods in a year...every pay period you EARN 4 hrs sick...
.................................................. ............every pay period you earn 4 hrs vacation for those 0-4 years
.................................................. ............every pay period you earn 6 hrs vacation for those 5-14 years
.................................................. ............every pay period you earn 8hrs vacation for those over 15 years on the job

I am WELL over 15 years on the job meaning every pay period I earn 4 hrs sick and 8hrs vacation...that's 13 sick days a year and 26 vacation days a year

A vacation mandate would do wonders for keeping unemployment at record high levels.

Unlike all other industrial/western nations in the World - the United States does not mandate any employees getting any paid/unpaid days off from work. So it is up to every company to decide how many days or weeks an employee will get, if any at all.

Most European and other industrial countries give its employee 3 - 6 weeks off + paid holidays, while the U.S. has no minimum law.

Should the United States mandate companies giving paid time off/vacation days for all workers like all other industrial countries?
Where's the button for:

(*) No, people who want their government to intrude even more into employers and employees affairs, should move to countries where this is already done, rather than try to change the govt we have here and force it upon people who don't want it

?

I'm not saying that it should be 6 weeks, but EVERYONE should be able to get at least 2 weeks after a year on the job.
In all seriousness, how old are you? What kind of work do you do? Do you own your own business?

We have enough socialism already in the US.

'Socialism'? How would setting a minimum vacation allowance for workers equal socialism?

Companies need regulation. We set regulations with regard to health and safety so why not for vacation? Most European countries do that and it doesn't negatively affect productivity.

Earn it how? If your company decides to no longer offer any sort of paid/unpaid time off, you CAN'T earn it!

As someone who has worked a year and a half with no vacation/sick time/PTO of any sort, yes, I say mandate it. I guarantee you that if more companies start dropping time off as a benefit, all you "socialism" screamers will change your tune

You people who say "No"...you should be happy you get Sunday's and Christmas off otherwise you would be working 14 hour days, 6 1/2 days per week.
