PhDs actually mean diddly squat. They are worthless outside theoretical academia. Most extreme leftists have PhDs because they've been brainwashed their whole school career and then in turn brain wash others into their warped fantasy liberal world view as teachers and professors.
Funny, the Heritage Foundation is choc full of PhDs and advanced degrees.
That doesn't count at all to libs. I have two degrees but took them so long ago that I didn't have to fight progressives as they hadn't taken over the colleges in the 1950s. I was, however, a good Democrat till they nominated an avowed socialist for President and haven't done anything different since. I know many people with advanced degrees that don't vote Democrat unless every person in Kansas who votes Dem in Kansas has those degrees, since they make up a very small minority in Kansas.
I did some research on David Lauter who is the editor who wrote the editorial our OP posted for us and learned that he has been fairly heavy into Democratic politics since he helped Bill Clinton get elected President. The man graduated from Yale U in the middle 70s and I have a loaded question he asked Obama. Now my info comes from NewsBusters so may not be completely true but here is something very interesting.

In a recent alumni interview with the Yale Daily News , Lauter was asked what one question he would ask President Obama: "A good politician almost always has an answer for one question. But if I could ask just one, it would be whether he now thinks he made a mistake by not asking for a bigger stimulus package his first year."

In my experience people who went to college are a bit more likely to be social progressives, but I haven't seen a strong correlation between voting Democrat and having a bachelor's degree or higher.
