No, the sky won't fall. Employers will stop giving medical benefits to spouses and the government will start chipping away at things like survivor's benefits for SS and survivor's benefits on pensions will end too (actually, I see pensions ending anyway). In short, they'll eliminate any benefit to being married which will eliminate the only purpose marriage ever served, legally, which was to protect women and children born into the union.

This will be the end of all spousal benefits eventualy. Too bad for those who want to contribute to society by raising a family.

Really?

It did nothing to protect men?

Adopted children?

It doesn't give hospital visitation rights to either spouse?

It doesn't protect either spouse from estate taxes?

And just WHY would employers stop giving medical benefits to spouses other than using SSM as a convenient excuse to cut expenses?

They need no other reason.

And have no other reason than the bottom line.

Spousal benefits will disappear with or without SSM, SSM is just a convenient excuse.

We're already headed this direction. Overturning DOMA will simply hasten the demise of spousal benefits since there is really no reason to extend them to gays. You, simply, do not have the issue of children being born into the union and one spouse being more negatively impacted, financially, than the other because they happen to be the one who gives birth. The elimination of things like being able to cover your spouse on your medical insurance and the write off for your spouse will make it much more difficult for women to choose to stay home with their kids. The elimination of spousal benefits on a pension or SS will make it foolish to take any amount of time off. This is all geared towards destroying any benefit there is to being in a traditional family. That's what this is really about.

The legal purpose of marriage is to protect women and children. When you extend marriage to those who do not have the issues women have in traditional marriages, you weaken the argument for spousal protection of any kind.

I agree we're headed there but we'll get there a lot faster with SSM as SSM weakens the argument for spousal benefits but this is what the gays want. If they can't have the benefits of marriage (never mind that they don't have the issues of marriage that those benefits address) then no one can have them. I would advise young people today to make sure they take care of their own retirement and count on no one else.

Weakens the argument?

Where is the strength of the argument?

Why should the same job effectively pay more to a married person than an unmarried one?
