This is from the USA Today:

President Obama unveiled a decades-long project Tuesday designed to map the inner workings of the brain, seeking answers to such challenges as epilepsy, autism and Alzheimer's disease. "There's this enormous mystery, awaiting to be unlocked," Obama said during remarks at the White House. The initial cost: $100 million in Obama's fiscal year 2014 budget to be proposed next week; Congress must approve the sum.

If this had any value, the PRIVATE SECTOR would fund it and reap the rewards. This is a lose-lose for the taxpayers. More Barack boondoggles to distract the people from his failure of a presidency.

I have a thread about this in the science and technology sub forum. I have mixed feeling about it as most of me is optimistic about the future, I think it will be 10 years not 50, but part of me is nervous as to how society will change to the new normal. For better or worse its going to happen and we cant stop it now though.

You don't have to but at least with the project we will have the ability for people who want to and that is only one aspect to reverse engineering the brain. The medical breakthroughs and AI are a lot more important then that is, IMO.

Funding the sciences is not why we are in debt. Projects like this bring back more money in the end with innovation etc.

The private sector always takes advantage of cutting-edge research by both government and our universities - in fact corporations rely on that. Funny how you are unaware of this - oh wait, "America's Newsroom" Fox "news" said something similar, like "leave it to the private sector" - once again attempting to paint Obama as "socialist" for its dim-bulb audience.
You really think that Obama made this decision on his own without scientific advisors? Only in the dumbed-down Fox world.

We do not have the money. We have far bigger issues that need to be dealt with.

I'll look that up and take a peek. Moore's Law has been pretty on the money so far. Everything doubles ever couple years or so. You may be right on the ten year thing instead of 50. It is hard to keep up now I can't imagine what it will be like in ten years. Your right the train is rolling no stopping it now.

Her butt is just divine. Barry O would not want to skimp on that fine booty.

Its actually down to 11 months now and the rate as which it is advancing is itself continuing to go faster. Another thread you might want to look at is this one:

Why hasn't the Singularity gone mainstream (yet?)

I constantly keep it updated on the new technologies coming out as well.
