Maybe you should explain to 320 million Americans why freedom and liberty are not important to you and how you would prefer that they not have freedom so that a few people can avoid injury.

Maybe you should teach your kids that Patrick Henry was a fool for saying "Give me liberty or give me death" 240 years ago.
That is all you might be doing? Looks like it hasn't been very effective, how long have you been trying to teach people online?

I realize this is kind of off-topic but since we seem to be discussing various abuses of police power . . . .

Local news last night showed a HUGE checkpoint stop in the city. The police were bragging that they had blocked off the normal 5 lanes of travel down to just one. They were looking for ??? nothing, really. People who were not wearing their seatbelts and/or people who had been drinking. Out of the hundreds of cars that they forced to stop - they had arrested only four people. Didn't say what for; I presume DUI.

For some reason, this just annoyed the hell out of me. Why in the world do they want to expend so much time, personnel, tax dollars, and equipment just to force 5 lanes of traffic into one?

They certainly weren't looking for terrorists.

All that to say, I think I do understand why people are concerned. Abuses of power certainly do occur and we are foolish to pretend they don't or won't.

so what if they occur. as long as they are rare and only in times of emergency, should we tolerate it.

Yes its going to happen. but would you rather allow a serial murderer walk freely or allow the police to do their job until the murderer is caught?

Patrick Henry nor Benjamin Franklin were God. They were fallible human beings like all the rest of us. That's for starts. Secondly, Franklin's quote is about "essential liberty". What did he mean by "essential"? None of us can get into his head (though some here on CD seem to think they are channeling him), but given his record, he was not in favor of anarchy. Is it "liberty" to have to live in fear that someone with the wherewithal to make and detonate a pressure cooker bomb is running around free? A temporary suspension ( a few hours really) of activity for some might be good for the "essential liberty" of all 320 million of us.

This isn't a difference of opinion, you are just ignorant of the facts and you don't seem to care one bit.

Why should we tolerate it? What happens when some innocent guy gets shot in his own home by accident during a warrant-less search?

The job of the police is not to escort law abiding citizens from their homes at gunpoint just in case there is a bad guy there. Perhaps you think that is how it should be? Hopefully after ever crime in your town the police come and pound on your door and drag you out at gunpoint just to see if the perpetrator is there. Maybe you will wake up at one point. Or you'll just eventually answer the door and grab your ankles and scream "thank you sir may I have another".

Gee...

An armed terrorist bomber who just killed or injured hundreds of citizens and a law enforcement officer, carjacks a guy and is now on foot, with bombs and guns and running in your town.

Tell us how you find this guy again?

Oh wait...call 911. I got it.

Ask the guy who found him out smoking a cig after the "lockdown" was lifted.
