While I am comfortable with my sanitation practices and I have never had a problem, I would be terrified that all it would take would be for ONE person to get sick (and maybe not even from my product) and I could lose everything.

So, I will just keep my milk to myself - make my yogurt, cheese, puddings, etc. - and the dogs and cats will get the extra. At least I know the dogs and cats won't sue me if they get a bellyache.

A friend of mine has a licensed raw milk dairy (goat) and she jumps through all the hoops - site inspection, routine animal testing, milk test, she even carries "raw milk insurance." It costs her a lot of money to stay in business - she also sells her milk for $9.00 a gallon.
Great post. Raw milk is extremely dangerous, so as you say to choose to use it for one's own consumption is a choice, to sell it to others becomes a huge libility.

That's going to the extreme, don't you think ?

Raw milk CAN be dangerous if not handled properly.
The key is to know your farmer.

Why sell raw chicken? Shouldn't that and eggs be precooked? Shouldn't it all be safe?

Well, I certainly know my farmer. lol

I actually have a pasteurizer but I stopped using it years ago - I notice a difference in the taste between the raw and pasteurized product and I much prefer the raw.

Again, I don't care who Joe Blow down the highway sells his milk to, but for me, it's a risk I'm not willing to take. And I would also probably choose to not buy from someone who wasn't licensed and inspected (although I have in the past - I used to buy wonderful raw cow's milk from various farmers/friends - back then for something like a dollar a gallon lol).

It would be a bigger win for the little guy if the government interfered with the large monopolizing corporations who used unfair business tactics to put many little guys out of business.

Yeah..I know mine too and her cows are eating my grass

As far as milk..I don't buy raw milk and if I get into it then it will be goat's milk, not cow milk and only for my consumption.
And with this Smithfield sale to China I may start looking into raising a hog or two each year.

Sheesh. NOBODY is trying to make the leap that because this farmer should be able to sell his milk means that all regulations should be done away with besides you.

I think public health is trickier than you make it out. How do you define "knowingly"? I am sure we would both agree that a Phd biochemist buying for his own use is knowledgeable. How about the friend of a child of a parent who thinks raw milk is "in". Or the client of a boutique ice cream store who believes only raw milk gets the really rich flavor?
I am not the parents babysitter and the fact that kids drank raw milk for centuries would lead me to believe what they decided was absolutely none of my business.

Personally I hated the way the cream would rise to the top so I drank mine as quick as possible before it happened.

Ice cream stores operate under different circumstances and as I said, nobody is calling for the removal of all regulations.

LOL, it's a wonder the human race ever survived. It's actually more of a surprise to me today than back when everyone drank raw milk.
