I've found that it's more often the religious zealots who lead the most bitter, hate filled lives. I think it's because they hold themselves up to the expectations of their respective deities and always fail miserably. That's why they hate gays and any other people who don't believe as they do. They are just bitter. There's no other word that comes close to describing them. I don't believe in their sky daddy and I lead a very happy, stress free (for the most part) life with my family. So I'd say the OP's premise is blatantly false
Because it is. Just look at what scientists have proved. But people believed the world was flat too. And my mom and dad gave me life not god.

I'm not a shallow thinker just realistic. So if my mother was just a carrier I guess my dad had nothing to do with my conception. It was all god. So why the heck do women need men then We can get pregnant without them.
I was raised a conversative Christian but consider myself an atheist now. I can imagine that anyone who believes in invisible people who have power over you could be classified as mentally ill. Heck, just consider the many religious figures that heard the voice of angels. I think we call that schizophrenia.
