On the other hand, since tesla owes its very survival to politicians that hand it taxpayer money, they in turn must dance to their whims.
In defense of Tesla, they've been in business long before Obama came along. And they are American innovators. Their battery is superior to any car out there. A fast sporty car that can drive 300 miles or so before needing a charge. The charge takes about 45 minutes---just brilliant. Also they are going to continue to manufacture in the states. Also prices are dropping and an affordable all electric tesla will be on the market soon. What's not to like?
Another example on how Republicans aren't anymore free market than Democrats and in many ways they are even more restrictive. Whatever happened to supporting free markets?!
Tesla is successfully exporting to Europe and the world. Shouldn't we help this great American innovator instead of letting the franchise system milk them till they die? When was the last time the dealerships invented anything usefull other than $500 pinstripes ?

To a much less degree as shown by who the corporate interests give their money to. Also, no, I sure don't give them a free pass; that exists only in your own mind.
really? because i only ever note you hammering republicans, never even suggesting the democrats have a hand in doing the exact same things, often times to an equal or greater degree.
as for selling direct to the consumer, that would be nice if there was a plan in place to deal with warranty issues, trade in issues, etc.
The reasons for the law in Ford or GM's case have been noted. I will also add that its a huge consumer protection law. If dealers decide to quit servicing these cars because the manufacturer undercuts them they are in a world of hurt.
How does this protect a consumer????

But why, unlike in case of electronics or food there are laws forcing this model on the market place?
I though you were opposed to regulations and government interference in business so why, all of a sudden, you support this obvious one?
If GM wants to open 600 dealerships let the do it. Why not?

Whats not to like? The fact that the government has propped them up with taxpayer money because consumers dont want their product.
But consumers love these carse, tesla can't make enough off them... Where I live tesla is the new Mercedes 550, everybody, who can afford it, wants one.

I don't agree. Tesla has developed a very good product. Don't confuse Tesla with that solar panel company that went under because they could not compete with China. Or that tired car "the Volt" This is very different.
