Yes. There is that too. I would like to think these 2 school administrators are merely too stupid to know what they are doing, but for some strange reason I feel like they may have had some alternative agenda.

[MOD CUT/off topic] Just another attempted history rewrite by the very people who are given the responsibility of presenting historical fact.

I have lately read quite a number of books on the social history of the 1920s and the early 20th century. I am often annoyed by the non-transparency of the narrator. I want the facts, not an opinion of the facts or something that looks like a high school persuasive history essay.

You give me the facts and I will draw my own conclusions and form my own opinions based on those facts. Really I will. I can think. Transparent narrator PLEASE!

I don't know if it's an overall trend, but the books on history I've read lately do give selected fact to an extent, but spend a lot more time peddling an opinion. This teacher is just taking it to the next level. Asking students to form an opinion without facts at all.

Agreed. It's about time Americans started to accurately investigate and view the Holocaust. Or they can just continue being spoon fed the yearly Hollywood Holocaust film release.

No, but they could be spoon fed the literally thousands of photos of the death camps that the Soviet, US, and UK forces took upon liberating them. Would that make it any more real for them?

Real enough for you? Or is this a clever 1945 photoshop job?

In the UK, School Children usually either go to visit the concentration camps, as well as WW1 and WW2 battle sites or they visit Holocaust Museums and Events.

The Holocaust Centre

The Holocaust - The Jewish Museum London

The Holocaust | Imperial War Museums

Steven Spielberg help sought to create new British Holocaust commemoration - Films - Arts and Entertainment - The Independent

WW II battle sites are a little difficult for U.S. kids to get to, but we do have a Jewish Museum in NYC and a Holocaust museum in DC.

There a much better ways to do that if that is the case and the age of the kids is much too young.

In this situation, it's such an offensive topic and it's been pushed by various groups....I mean, imagine some German school handing out an assignment to 8th graders asking them if it's true that white people are superior to the lesser races?

There is just no fixing that mess....

Personally, I want to know HOW that assignment came to pass. The initial defense of the assignment followed by back-tracking could indicate that they started asking questions about how the assignment came to be and they found something bad.

.....and we have one in KC that I'm sitting about a mile away from as we speak....the one where two people were murdered by a neo-nazi just weeks ago.

The timing of the assignment I find to be.....galling.

There better be firings over this one.

I suspect that children in the UK get a much better education than they do in this country. Our schools don't put much effort into education any more, rather it's on indoctrination.

And that "investigating" would probably lead them to internet hate groups and Neo-Nazi or radical Muslim propaganda-probably not the best assignment for easily-influenced 8th graders.

I do think that we should learn more about other genocides in history. I often wondered how a "holocaust" is different than the many "genocides" that have occured throughout history that many people don't even know about. Technically The Irish Potato "famine" was a genocide as England was still exporting plenty of food.
