You're right, I misread. The requirement is that there is a fetus and the accused knew the woman was pregnant.

Florida Unborn Victims of Violence Act (HB 59) | RHRC Data
Still a slippery slope, legislating new "legal protection" for a "fetus at any stage of development".

In this case, it only applies to injuries caused by " criminal acts". But we all know where the religious loons want to take this.

"State law enforcement could not charge John Welden for killing Remee Jo Lee's unborn child."

"Federal authorities wound up charging Welden, but that charge was dropped when Welden agreed to plead guilty to product tampering. He was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison."

"The new law in October expands a current law that allows for murder or manslaughter charges only if a fetus dies after it has developed to a point where it can survive outside the womb."

So while it doesn't stop abortion (which is the true Civil Rights issue of our time), it does punish somebody for killing a pregnant woman by charging them with two murders. If a baby isn't a person how could that be possible? Because it is.

Florida deserves a round of applause for taking another step forward at ending the War on Babies!
I can fully respect being against abortion and killing developing children. But why doesn't this republican respect of life go further?

45,000 Americans die each year from not having health insurance, and republicans oppose health insurance for all.
New study finds 45,000 deaths annually linked to lack of health coverage | Harvard Gazette

Pollution from coal power plants kills 13,000 Americans each year and causes 20,000 heart attacks. But republicans oppose reducing this pollution, in fact GW Bush increased this pollution more.

Why do republicans care so much about the lives of unborn children, and don't care about the 45,000 people who die each year from no insurance?

And why don't republicans care about people dying from coal power plant pollution?

Hmmm, if moral people who do not believe in murdering unborn babies are 'religious loons' then what are the immoral male and female promiscuous whores who jump into the sack with anyone every time they have a little itch, and choose to murder fetuses as their preferred method of birth control?

BTW, I am an atheist, and I do not support abortion!

I certainly support the lives of children outside the womb. However there are better ways to solve our insurance problem than Obamacare which has made everything worst and is responsible for people dying. It also partly funds abortions. And your numbers are exaggerated, massives amounts of people are not dying because a lack of health insurance.

I also question your report on coal fired power plants and health hazards. It seems a little over exaggerated to me. Do you have another source to support that one?

Republicans fight so much for the lives of unborn children, and it would seem people with this love of life would want to help all children.

18,000 children starve to death everyday.
18,000 children die every day of hunger, U.N. says - USATODAY.com

But if the US government spoke about government money being used to save those children, the republicans would be strongly against it.

Why does this republican respect of life only go to unborn children?

We don't. I already explained this to you. We are not against safety nets, we are just against people abusing our safety nets. If we took away all the Federal money that goes into Planned Parenthood for abortions we could spend it instead on adoption agencies and keeping kids healthy.

Again, back alley abortions were extremely rare. And just because something can be achieved through the black market doesn't make it okay to kill someone else. The Mafia kills people through the black market all the time, should we legalize that?

Sheesh. What the guy did was really wrong but I have a sneaking suspicion this is just going to explosively going to backfire in the faces of Florida's political leadership (not just the Governor).
