New Florida law will make killing fetuses a crime

"It will soon become a crime in Florida to kill or injure a fetus at any stage of development."

"Gov. Rick Scott on Friday signed a bill (HB 59) into law that was a response to the case of a Tampa-area woman who was tricked into taking an abortion pill."

"State law enforcement could not charge John Welden for killing Remee Jo Lee's unborn child."

"Federal authorities wound up charging Welden, but that charge was dropped when Welden agreed to plead guilty to product tampering. He was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison."

"The new law in October expands a current law that allows for murder or manslaughter charges only if a fetus dies after it has developed to a point where it can survive outside the womb."

So while it doesn't stop abortion (which is the true Civil Rights issue of our time), it does punish somebody for killing a pregnant woman by charging them with two murders. If a baby isn't a person how could that be possible? Because it is.

Florida deserves a round of applause for taking another step forward at ending the War on Babies!

So, it's back to the back alleys for Florida women.
Too bad.

You didn't read the story obviously. This isn't about abortion. And back alley abortions were very rare even before Roe V Wade.

Killing babies is killing babies. You can't be for Civil Rights unless you are for the Civil Rights of babies.

I loathe this law, but pretty much every state has a fetal homicide law - which is what this is. If you read closely, the new law would not penalize tricking a woman into taking an abortion pill like plan B or have treated the referenced case differently. In the case they refer to, the fetus was 7 weeks old and under this new law the fetus would have to be viable. A 7 week old fetus isn't viable.

Heh. A Right to Life group? No, they're not biased at all.

Just because they are a Pro Life group doesn't mean their findings are inaccurate. You are attacking the group instead of the actual material, this is known as a Guilt by Association Fallacy.

I read it differently, Lycos. It looks as if Florida is expanding its extant law to include a fetus at any stage of development.

How sad that you believe this article. You do know that abortions have always existed. There were not called back alley for nothing. If something is illegal you can always get it on the black market.

Important caveat:

"Harming a fetus while committing a crime, no matter how small the embryo, would carry stiffer penalties under a proposed law . . ."
