We have the dumbest, most useless "college educated" people.
College is a joke now bc anyone can go. Don't actually have to qualify for anything.
No standards + pressure to graduate = dumbass grads.
True, unless you're studying a real degree like medicine, engineering, or computer science. The workload is very intense and there is a lot of pressure and deadlines.
Just like the ACA solution for healthcare, two free years of community college is far from a good enough solution. Just like most other first world countries have universal healthcare for their citizens, why shouldn't we have full free education for the citizens? I mean let's be serious, if having the schooling is a requirement to get the jobs, then why put up a barrier to keep people from being able to take these jobs? We didn't charge ridiculous student loans so people could go to high school when that used to be the only requirement for a good job.
Liberals love the word free, till they find out someone has to pay for it. As Margret Thatcher said, "Socialism is fine, until you run out of other peoples money"
Yup. Things that are free are treated as worthless. Just look at public education.
And people need to look at places where education is free because it's not for everyone when it's free. It's only for those who place high enough in the field. There is no point in giving a free education to everyone as some aren't college material in the first place. That is a fact we don't care to face here.
What on Earth are you talking about? I realize that our public education system needs reforms and I'm generally opposed to the teachers union, but to say that public education is "worthless" is simply not accurate. Our public school system was the single most important factor in helping build America into what it is today. We've led the World economically and militarily for generations, largely because we led the World in pioneering a universally accessible public school system. There's lots of things we need to fix about our public schools, but they are definitely not "worthless."
How about we just go back to the old days when states funded higher education at levels that made college affordable?
Doesn't really work when states constantly slash funding, causing the cost of college to rise radically faster than wages.
But I wouldn't expect right wing extremists to be aware of how or why college costs are rising. Classic "I've got mine so f**k you" mentality at work.
What doesn't work is colleges and universities failing to do ANYTHING to control costs. The tuition at both public and private universities is out of whack with the service provided. Lets say you hire an instructor for undergrad courses for $80k. Allowing for overhead and burden your cost reasonably is somewhere around $200k a year. Now if we assume 50 students in a classroom, that works out to $4000 per year per student. I don't regard that as an unreasonable price. How universities come up with expenses of 3-5 times, or more, than that, stretches any kind of credibility It is irresponsible if not actually corrupt. Yes, even universities should manage to operate efficiently and provide their service for a competitive, market-driven price. Part of the problem is that the ready availability of loans and grants have allowed schools to get away with charging prices that are rising drastically faster than inflation, and do nothing to improve efficiency. The ready availability of college aid has taken the free market out of the equation.
As it is right now, if you make less than 80k a year you can receive pell grants. That is "free" money to pay for school. Most college students have to fill out a FAFSA application in order to get government student loans or Grants. Depending on your income previous year they decide what kind of financial aid you will receive. Up until 2 years ago I received 1500 per semester. That was enough for tuition at a community college. Many low income student receive much more than that.
So, with this new "free college" for everyone, that would mean even households making more than 80 k a year will benefit from this. No discrimination.
Please note the " " marks. I know it's nothing like free money.
So can I (and everyone else with a 4-year degree) receive a refund equal to 2 years' tuition? Dammit, I was exploited by the educational system and want my reparations!
Community college is pretty ****ing cheap as it is. Even more so when you go out west. As someone already pointed out, there are tons of grants out there for low income students.
IF they do this it needs to be strict regulations. Like not all programs should be "free". Only programs that are worth a **** in the real world. In other words, no useless degrees. You have to maintain a minimum 3.0 gpa.
Work to pay for their education? That's way too radical.
Paying for college out of pocket has become unfeasible for most. We need to focus on the cost of college not whether its free or not free. It's available to anyone via loans and grants, but the cost is out of control.
